NSG Environmental Ltd has been delivering work programmes in the nuclear industry for over 40 years. Traditionally in the areas of decommissioning and waste management, NSG now has a broad customer base and provides a wide spectrum of services across the nuclear project lifecycle, ranging from expert consultancy support, R&D and engineering design to rekit and refurbishment, site installation services and high-hazard physical decommissioning works, amongst others. This work is delivered at NSG's own offices and purpose-built facilities and nuclear sites across the UK. The delivery and management of these projects and programmes of work is carried out by a skilled workforce composed of both white-collar and blue-collar personnel in technical, administrative, and physical roles.

The Role

The position of Engineering Manager (Defence) will provide technical, task and people management expertise in support of NSG's portfolio of work for our clients operating in the Defence sector.

Key Objectives

Technical Management

  • Support the technical delivery of multi-disciplinary projects through collaborative working and providing leadership, organisation, and direction towards the development of engineering deliverables.
  • Ensure the quality of engineering deliverables meets appropriate Company, Client and legislative requirements, as well as Relevant Good Practise (RGP)
  • Provide direct and embedded engineering management to Client projects.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables.
  • Driving innovation into technical solutions
  • Working with cross-functional teams to control project scope
  • Maintain and promote awareness of Engineering best practice and wider engineering issues.

Functional Management

  • Identify skills and resource gaps and work towards addressing them.
  • Ensure that projects are adequately resourced with SQEP personnel.
  • Contribute to present and future resourcing strategies, including apprentices and graduates.

People Management

  • Support the development of engineers at all levels of seniority.
  • Provide direct line management to one or more engineers.
  • Ensure that the demonstrable competence (SQEP) of the engineering team is documented and maintained across all disciplines.
  • Work with the engineering and people development teams to plan and deliver NSG's Graduate Engineering Programme on an ongoing basis.
  • Provide mentorship for early careers engineers across the business.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Senior Leadership Team to manage remuneration, discipline, and team engagement/morale.

Additional Tasks

Carry out any task as deemed reasonable by a Director or NLT member in the interest of the company.

  • Financial signatory levels and responsibilities are defined in the Corporate Governance Document.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in engineering supported by practical experience or equivalent - Essential
  • Membership of appropriate technical / professional body - Desirable

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience of applying engineering theory to solve engineering problems in a highly regulated industry - Essential
  • Experience of system design and specification including interface design and specification. - Essential
  • Understanding of the UK Nuclear Industry - Essential
  • Understanding of radiological protection principles - Desirable
  • Knowledge of IR35 legislation - Desirable
  • Used to dealing with confidential and commercial information - Desirable
  • Familiar with QSHEW operating procedures and requirements etc. - Desirable

Skills & Abilities

  • Competent user of MS Office - Essential
  • Well organised with the ability to work to timescales and demonstrate attention to detail. - Essential
  • Ability to grasp new and abstract concepts and ideas quickly - Essential
  • Ability to prepare and present reports, documentation and information in support of project delivery - Essential
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate technical data - Essential

Overtime Payments - No overtime applicable for this role

Holiday Entitlement - 187.5 hours per calendar year, plus statutory holidays, increase for Long Service: 10, 15, 20 years
