Overview

Principal Power Systems Engineer (EMS)

Starting Salary Range: $148,000.00 - $169,000.00. This position is eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. You will be part of a highly skilled team at the core of MISO's mission supporting the control rooms by leading critical modernization projects. As the electric utility industry undergoes digitalization, decentralization, and decarbonization, MISO's Operations Technology Integration team is growing to meet these challenges. You will help MISO maintain reliability by advancing and advising key initiatives in the market and reliability portfolio for a rapidly changing future, while mentoring junior engineers. The team will collaborate closely with Research & Development, Grid software vendors, IT Architecture, Business & Digital Transformation, and Grid Operations to develop practical technical solutions and outcomes that enable MISO's operations to execute effectively now and into the future. This role requires curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and a strong commitment to ensuring continuous operation of the systems powering the electric grid. A successful Principal Power Systems Engineer will bridge technical engineering and IT needs and present updates to leadership while mentoring junior engineers. You will have opportunities to work on projects such as Energy Management System roadmaps, control room visualization, synchrophasor strategy, and simulation capabilities for training. In one year, you will know you are successful if you can connect key industry changes to the relevant processes at MISO and develop creative solutions to propel operations into the future.

Responsibilities

• Lead modernization projects within MISO's Operations Technology Integration team to support reliable electric grid operations.
• Bridge technical engineering and IT needs; present updates to leadership; mentor junior engineers.
• Collaborate with Research & Development, Grid software vendors, IT Architecture, Business & Digital Transformation, and Grid Operations to develop practical technical solutions and outcomes.
• Contribute to initiatives in the market and reliability portfolio to enable current and future operations.
• Work on projects such as Energy Management System roadmaps, control room visualization, synchrophasor strategy, and simulation capabilities for training.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology (as listed).
• At least ten years of utility, transmission operations, real-time operations, or related experience.
• Production-grade programming experience in C++, Python, or other suitable languages.

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
