Description du poste

Company Description

As a global key player in yeasts and fermentation, Lesaffre designs, manufactures, and markets innovative solutions for Baking, Food taste & pleasure, Healthcare, and Biotechnology.

Founded in northern France in 1853, Lesaffre is now a multinational and multicultural company committed to working confidently to better nourish and protect the planet.

With over 11,000 employees across more than 50 countries, Lesaffre achieves a turnover of 3 billion euros.

Job Description

As a member of the Microbial Engineering team within the Bioengineering Center of Excellence (Lesaffre Institute for Science and Technology) in France, you will support classical breeding programs for fungi, yeast, and bacteria, including mutagenesis, cell fusion, hybridization/mating/crossing, and marker-assisted selection.

Your initial focus will be on classic yeast genetics, with fungal and bacterial breeding as secondary but essential responsibilities in the long term.

Your main missions will include:

  1. Develop and execute laboratory strategies to study and create microbial genetic diversity using classical approaches (tetrads dissection, FACS, ALE, plate selection, phenotyping, genomic typing), high-throughput system biology methods (phenomics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics), and automated breeding technology within a Biofoundry environment.
  2. Support genotype selection and strain improvement programs for applications such as breadmaking, brewing, winemaking, fuel ethanol, distillers, cell extracts, and nutraceuticals.
  3. Independently research academic literature, troubleshoot complex problems, and propose solutions or experimental plans.
  4. Maintain high-quality documentation of work and discoveries through reports, presentations, electronic lab notebooks, internal databases, and software documentation.

The Microbial Breeding Research Associate will report to the Head of Microbial Engineering at LIST. The role requires flexibility, balancing laboratory and desk activities, collaborating with technicians and scientists, performing experiments, and preparing reports and presentations.

Qualifications

  • MSc in biology, life sciences, genetics, bioengineering, or related fields, with experience in industrial microbiology and yeast breeding.
  • Technical experience in two of the following: yeast mating and hybridization with automated pipelines, mutagenesis, genomic breeding.
  • Willingness to learn programming in R or Python for data analysis and statistics, with knowledge of collaborative software development practices preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects.
  • Effective collaboration skills with internal and external stakeholders, using innovative approaches and lean management principles.
  • Curiosity, motivation, and adaptability to work in unfamiliar areas of biology.
