About Nanological

Nanological is a deep tech startup building anew class of in vitro diagnostic tools, starting with the rapid detection of sepsis. Our proprietary platform integrates optomechanical sensing and machine learning to transform complex physical signals into actionable clinical answers.

We’ve been recognized as a Deep Tech Pioneer by Hello Tomorrow, selected among the Top 100 startups by APTE and awarded by EIT Health, Parque Científico de Madrid, and the Spanish Ministry of Equality for our innovation and clinical impact.

The Role

We are seeking a versatile and highly skilled Software & Electronics Integration Engineer to support and expand our advanced measurement and control system. This role combines software engineering, hardware integration, system maintenance, and prototype development. You will help maintain the current system, integrate new components, and participate in the design and implementation of the data processing and storage pipeline for our next-generation prototype.

Key Responsibilities
  • System Maintenance & Enhancement
    • Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the existing measurement and control platform.
    • Diagnose system issues involving software, electronics, and hardware interfaces.
    • Ensure reliable and stable system operation in both research and production environments.
    • Develop and maintain user interfaces (web or desktop) that support system configuration, monitoring, data visualization, and workflow control.
  • Hardware & Electronics Integration
    • Integrate new hardware components such as motion controllers, embedded systems, actuators, and sensors.
    • Develop and maintain communication interfaces and drivers for hardware devices.
    • Work closely with R&D engineers to ensure robust interconnects, clean signals, and reliable system behavior.
  • Firmware, Drivers & Communication Layers
    • Develop and maintain firmware/software modules that communicate with external devices.
    • Experience with communication protocols such as UART/Serial, I2C, SPI, USB, Ethernet/TCP-IP.
    • Ability to implement robust communication layers in Python and/or C++.
  • Prototype Development
    • Contribute to the design and development of a new prototype system, from architecture definition to implementation.
    • Support decisions on hardware interfaces and system structure.
    • Participate in integrating new subsystems into a cohesive platform.
  • Data Processing & Storage
    • Design and implement data processing pipelines for high-throughput or real-time data.
    • Develop reliable data storage systems (local or cloud-based).
    • Apply good data architecture practices: metadata, logging, reproducibility, versioning.
What We’re Looking For
  • Required
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
    • Strong experience in hardware/software integration.
    • Solid programming skills in Python and/or C++.
    • Experience with embedded systems, electronics, and communication protocols (UART, I2C, SPI, USB, Ethernet).
    • Familiarity with real-time or high-speed data acquisition systems.
  • Preferred
    • Experience with FPGA development (Verilog/VHDL) or similar digital logic environments.
    • Experience with SDR-based acquisition platforms, along with a solid understanding of analog-to-digital conversion principles and the constraints/design considerations of embedded or fixed-precision processing pipelines.
    • Experience working with motion systems, robotics components, positioning hardware, or precision instrumentation.
    • Familiarity with software testing practices, CI/CD workflows, and version control (Git) to ensure maintainable, reliable, and well‑tracked code.
    • Background in designing data pipelines and storage architectures.
    • Comfort working in Linux environments.
Soft Skills
  • Strong problem‑solving mindset with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists.
Why Join Nanological?
  • Work on a first-in-class diagnostic technology grounded in more than a decade of research at CSIC.
  • Join an award‑winning deep‑tech project recognised by leading European innovation programmes.
  • Have direct impact on a system designed to improve early decision‑making in sepsis care.
