Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. The Institute of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences (IPBW) at the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Geography and Geosciences invites applications for the position of University Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology.

Salary grade W 3 LBesG | Civil Servant (tenured)

Tasks and expectations:

We are looking for a candidate who is internationally recognized with outstanding achievements in a current research area in pharmaceutical biology. Applicants should preferably demonstrate research achievements in the area of pharmaceutical biology with a focus on biogenic active substances and the elucidation of their mechanisms of action. Experience in RNA research is desirable.

  • The professorship is located at the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences (IPBW). The candidate’s research should represent a meaningful contribution to the institute’s research areas, regarding both methods and topics. We expressly expect the candidate to establish networks within the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Geography and Geosciences, the Faculty of Biology, especially with the IBFW, as well as with the University Medical Center and research institutes at the site such as the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB). We expect the candidate to successfully acquire competitive third-party funding. In addition, the development of and active participation in research activities such as Collaborative Research Centers (SFBs) and graduate schools involving the faculty and/or the profile areas of JGU is desired. The integration into Transregio 319 „RNA Modification and Processing“ is particularly welcomed.
  • The future holder of the position is expected to represent the field of pharmaceutical biology in its full breadth, and to conduct courses in pharmaceutical biology for the state examination degree program “Pharmaceutical Sciences” (in German) and the bachelor’s/master’s degree programs “Biomedical Chemistry”. A license to practice as a pharmacist (Approbation) is desirable, as is prior teaching experience in pharmaceutical biology. The holder of the position actively contributes to advancing the contents and concepts of the degree programs, e.g., in terms of modern didactical methods and the application of digital tools in teaching.
  • Active involvement in academic self‑administration of the university, the Faculty and the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences is expected.

Requirements:

  • In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in section 49 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland‑Palatinate.
  • In addition to a doctorate, further academic achievements must be proven through a habilitation in connection with a junior professorship, or academic achievements of equal standing. The candidate is particularly expected to have pedagogical training and the qualification to lead an independent work group.
  • The state of Rhineland‑Palatinate and JGU are committed to the close personal mentoring of students and therefore expect teaching staff to have a strong presence at the university. A cooperative, team‑oriented and proactive work attitude, strong communication skills, and the willingness to assume responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines – is also expected.
