About the Institute of Medical Psychology and Behavioral Neurobiology

The institute is part of the Medical Faculty at the University of Tübingen and is led by Professor Jan Born. We investigate how sleep supports memory formation, learning, and cognitive processing. Our research focuses on the neural and physiological mechanisms through which sleep stabilizes and transforms newly acquired information. We combine human sleep experiments, behavioral and cognitive testing, and animal models to uncover fundamental principles of sleep‑dependent memory consolidation.

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

You will play a central role in supporting the daily operation of both our human sleep laboratories and animal research facilities. Responsibilities include:

Human sleep labs
  • Maintain and organize all supplies and materials needed for human sleep studies
  • Oversee ordering, inventory management, and restocking of consumables and technical components
  • Assist with preparing the sleep lab for nightly or daytime recordings (room setup, equipment readiness)
Animal research
  • Manage and plan mouse colonies, including breeding and documentation
  • Perform animal handling, routine monitoring, and preparation for behavioral or physiological experiments
  • Conduct histology, immunostaining, and microscopy‑based data processing
  • Maintain equipment and supplies used in animal experiments
  • Support general lab upkeep (solutions, glassware, autoclaving, waste disposal)
  • Oversee documentation for genetic engineering, biosafety (virus/S1), and work safety
  • Contribute to a reliable, well‑organized, and collegial working environment
Required qualifications
  • Completed vocational training and state recognition as a Biological Technical Assistant (BTA), or a completed B.Sc. in a life science discipline (or equivalent)
  • Ability to work independently and structure workflows efficiently
  • Excellent reliability, attention to detail, and a proactive work attitude
  • Strong organizational skills and willingness to learn
  • Enjoyment of working in an international, research‑driven environment
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities
