Overview

AWS is introducing the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), a significant development in Utility Computing. We are seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in cloud operations to lead operations and development teams delivering high-availability AWS services for EU customers, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock. Responsibilities

• Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, collaborating with global AWS teams to influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
• Partner with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
• Operate and improve one of the largest software systems, review operational health, and draft actionable bug reports when anomalies are found.
• Follow change management processes when making changes to production systems and support the resolution of the team backlog of operational issues.
• Develop or share tools (e.g., scripts) to help diagnose and address hard problems faster.
• Occasionally participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents outside of regular hours.

Eligibility and Qualifications

• Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
• Legal right to work in Germany is required.
• Amazon relocation support available for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
• This position involves on-call responsibilities.
• Experience supporting cloud systems or other services with proficient troubleshooting to improve performance, reliability, or availability.
• Proficiency in executing standard operating procedures and following operational best practices.
• Knowledge of scripting (Bash, Python, Ruby) or programming languages (Java, TypeScript, or similar).
• Experience working cross-organizationally and leading strategic team efforts requiring collaboration across multiple teams.
• Experience with performance tuning and fleet utilization optimization.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
