Job Description:

Student Assistant (HiWi) Position (12h/week) – Urban Soils Research

Support soil sampling and field measurements for ongoing research. Tasks include:

  • Assisting with the collection of soil samples in tree pits and green areas in Munich and Freising
  • Supporting in situ measurements (e.g., soil infiltration, compaction, moisture)

About the Project:

This research explores how different soil surface management types (such as vegetation, grass, gravel, and exposed soil) affect soil functions in urban green spaces. By measuring key soil properties like water infiltration, retention, compaction, moisture, and carbon content, the project aims to understand how urban soils contribute to ecosystem services. Fieldwork is conducted across Munich, focusing on tree pits and green areas.

Measurements are carried out both on-site and in the lab to support improved soil and tree management strategies in cities.

Your Role: You will support soil sampling and field measurements for ongoing research. Tasks include:

  • Assisting with the collection of soil samples in tree pits and green areas in Munich and Freising
  • Supporting in situ measurements (e.g., soil infiltration, compaction, moisture)

Duration and Working Hours: Starting in September (or as early as possible) until the end of October, with a possibility of extension. Working time is 12 hours per week, flexibly distributed over 2–3 days.

Requirements:

  • Availability from September to October, with flexibility in working hours
  • Interest in fieldwork, urban soils, soil science, or related fields
  • Experience with soil sampling and lab work is a plus — enthusiasm to learn is equally appreciated
  • Reliability, teamwork, and attention to detail

How to Apply: Please send a short email expressing your interest, including a brief motivation statement, your CV, preferred weekly hours, and any relevant experience (especially fieldwork or soil-related work) to [contact email] by 08/08/.
