Job Description

The LIAG INSTITUTE FOR APPLIED GEOPHYSICS is offering the following position at the earliest possible date with 100% of the regular weekly working hours for a limited period until 30.11.28, possibly with the option of extension. The role focuses on seismic borehole and vibrational source development and is part of the joint project ‘Monthy’, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Your Tasks
  • Independent planning, coordination and scientific monitoring of the research activities within the joint project as well as coordination with internal and external partners
  • Conception, organisation and conduction of seismic field campaigns, in particular borehole seismics and SV-wave tomography
  • Testing, optimisation and validation of the SV‑borehole source in the field laboratory and at the pilot site; comparison with established impulse sources
  • Evaluation of seismic data using modern processing and modelling methods (including conceptual work on source characteristics, numerical models to simulate wave propagation)
  • Development of site‑specific subsurface models and derivation of critical elastic and mechanical parameters
  • Preparation of scientific reports, project contributions, conference abstracts, and publications; preparation of results for partner institutions and funding bodies; presentation of research results at conferences
You Have
  • A university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in geophysics, geosciences with a specialisation in geophysics, physics or a comparable discipline and a doctorate
  • Sound knowledge and proven scientific experience in the fields of applied reflection seismics and seismic wave propagation
  • Very good understanding of seismic measurement technology and signal processing as well as practical experience in these fields
  • Experience in the planning and conduction of geophysical field measurements
  • Sound knowledge of seismic data processing and modelling
  • Ability for interdisciplinary teamwork and scientific coordination
  • Good knowledge of English (at least comparable to level B2 GER); willingness to learn German
  • A method of working orientated towards scientific requirements
  • Willingness and suitability for field work (physical resilience for outdoor work over several days in potentially challenging environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain and uneven terrain as well as the ability to transport loads of up to 25 kg)
  • Creativity and ability to work in a team
Ideally, You Also Fulfil The Following Requirements
  • German language skills (at least comparable to level B2 GER)
  • Experience in the interpretation of seismic data
  • Experience in the field of geothermal exploration
  • Experience with borehole logging systems/borehole seismics, especially in the context of tomographic measurements
  • Experience with other methods of applied geophysics
  • Class B driving licence
