About AQT

At AQT we build quantum computers. Founded in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2018, we aim to bring quantum technologies out of the laboratory environment and turn them into everyday products. We build quantum computers based on trapped‑ions, which are installed on normal IT infrastructure and can be readily operated from any PC or laptop. We provide quantum technology for research laboratories and supercomputing centers. To our industrial customers, we offer quantum solutions through partnerships with leading quantum software firms. In the past five years, we have managed to build up an amazing team with extraordinary ambition and talent, a world‑class team of quantum physicists, engineers, and computer experts working together to shape the future of quantum computing. For our team in Munich, we are now looking for a skilled and motivated individual to join us as a Quantum Systems Engineer.

Your role

As a Quantum Systems Engineer, you will work as a key contributor and operator to the growing range of AQT quantum systems. As such, you will be responsible for developing, setting up, and operating trapped‑ion quantum computers and relevant test devices. You will be involved in the entire operational lifecycle – from requirements gathering and design to development, assembly, testing, deployment, and maintenance. For this position we are looking for someone who enjoys operating quantum computers and skillfully applies concepts from experimental physics, applied physics, and engineering, as required to operate a state‑of‑the‑art, cutting‑edge trapped‑ion quantum computer.

Responsibilities
  • You will be part of a team with a mission to develop, set up, and operate trapped‑ion quantum computers and relevant test devices.
  • Assembling and operating trapped‑ion quantum computer hardware.
  • Characterizing trapped‑ion quantum computers using state‑of‑the‑art experiments and measurement techniques.
  • Analyzing and optimizing the performance of our quantum computers.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders inside and outside the system operators team, to include customers which utilize our QC systems.
  • Continuously improving yourself and how we do things.
Required Skills
  • PhD in experimental physics, engineering, applied physics, physical chemistry, or related fields (or demonstrated experience) is mandatory; PhD in the field of trapped‑ion physics preferred.
  • Experience in atomic, molecular, and optical physics experiments (e.g., lasers, laser cooling, laser spectroscopy, optics, microwaves, vacuum systems).
  • Knowledge and experience in areas such as linear and nonlinear optics, photonics, high‑frequency electronics, cryogenics, ultra‑high vacuum systems, opto‑electronics, electrodynamics, and/or lasers.
  • Hands‑on experience with trapped‑ion quantum computing or other quantum computing platforms is a plus (superconducting qubits, spin qubits, NV centre systems, photonics, etc.).
  • An independent mindset and readiness to learn and apply new software and hardware skills.
  • Fluent communication and writing skills in English.
  • Creativity and a desire to work in a multicultural and interdisciplinary team.
Good reasons to join AQT

Look forward to working on ground‑breaking technologies at the cutting‑edge of industry. You will become part of a passionate and international team, work in a unique environment with cutting‑edge manufacturing and laboratory infrastructure and have the opportunity to shape the future of quantum computing. We value creativity and actively search for team players with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for technology. AQT is growing, and we’d like to give you the chance to grow with us: We believe in letting our team members pursue their passions, and in helping each other thrive. Your position has the potential to grow into a long‑term opportunity. Since we know there is a life outside of work, we do our best to create a family‑friendly atmosphere and enable flexible working hours or part‑time options.

Your salary

Austrian law stipulates that the formal minimum salary of EUR 46.807,32 per year, according to Collective Bargaining Agreement, must be specified in job postings. Please note that, according to your experience and skills, we are typically paying much more.
