THE LAB PRESS is hiring a part-time, freelance Marketing Graphic Designer to support our Marketing + PR team. This role blends day-to-day marketing design support with occasional in-person content capture in the Greater Los Angeles area (approximately quarterly). You’ll work closely with our Freelance Social Media Manager and internal team to keep our marketing visuals consistent, polished, and on brand—without heavy creative overhead or micromanagement.
This is not an entry-level role. We’re looking for a junior-to-mid-level designer with solid fundamentals, strong execution, and a portfolio that reflects real-world marketing work.
Key responsibilities
Marketing design (primary)
- Design social media graphics and lightweight campaign assets (templates, recurring series, announcements, event promos)
- Create simple graphics for website updates, blog posts, and newsletters (e.g., headers, feature images, callouts)
- Collaborate with the marketing team on merch and promo items (concept support, production-ready files, vendor handoff as needed)
- Provide light design support to the internal design/production team as needed (non-advanced tasks, quick turn assets)
Content capture + short-form video (secondary)
- Attend select LA-area signings and special events to capture photo and video content for marketing use
- Organize and deliver usable assets to the Social Media Manager (Dropbox/Drive workflow)
- Create simple short-form social videos from captured footage (basic edits for social), or provide video selects to the Social Media Manager—whichever workflow you both decide is most efficient
Collaboration and workflow
- Work in tandem with the Social Media Manager to ensure visuals and content support the social calendar and planned campaigns
- Maintain consistency with established brand guidelines (voice, look, and overall presentation)
- Communicate proactively and work independently after onboarding—this team operates with trust and autonomy
Time commitment and working style
- Part-time, ongoing freelance engagement (hours can flex based on launches/events)
- Mostly work-from-home
- In-person attendance required for select Greater LA events (approximately quarterly; occasional evenings/weekends for special events)
Requirements
- Must live in the Greater Los Angeles area
- 3+ years of professional graphic design experience (marketing-focused)
- Portfolio required (social graphics, web/blog/newsletter assets, merch or print items preferred)
- Comfortable collaborating with a small team and taking direction when needed, while owning execution independently
- Ability to capture quality photo/video at events (does not need to be “cinematic,” but must be usable and consistent)
- Basic short-form video editing capability OR willingness to support a shared workflow where the Social Media Manager handles editing
Nice to have
- Experience in book publishing, comics, collectibles, animation, tabletop/gaming, or adjacent “geek culture” industries (not celebrity entertainment)
- Familiarity with print production basics for merch/promo items
- Ability to create simple motion/animated short-form video
Tools
We use Dropbox, Google Drive, and Slack. You may use your preferred design and editing tools; we’re primarily concerned with clean deliverables and reliable workflow.
