Doctoral student (m/f/d)
in the field of Religiosity and History of the Greek Labor Migration to Germany (1960-1982)
The position is embedded within the interdisciplinary LOEWE Centre for the Humanities and Social Sciences entitled „Dynamics of Religion: Ambivalent Neighborhoods between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in Historical and Contemporary Constellations“. It is funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science, Research, Art and Culture (HMWK). The centre focuses on the examination of the complex (both dialogical and conflictual) religious, cultural, and political-social interactions and dynamics between Judaism, Christianity and Islam in history and the present day. It utilizes the concept of "neighborhood" and aims to explore the religious, cultural, and political-social interconnections and dynamics between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in five program areas and 31 subprojects.
The doctoral position advertised here is situated in Program Area 3 „Flight and Migration as a Challenge“ and will investigate religious aspects in the history of Greek labor migration in the Federal Republic of Germany between 1960 and 1982 using Oral History methodology. The central question is how religious daily life shaped the lives of Greek labor migrants in the Federal Republic between 1960 and 1980. The project therefore focuses on the examination of religious everyday practices and local dynamics of religiosity in multi-religious, multi-ethnic or multinational spaces such as neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, public spaces, etc. Equally of interest are negotiation processes between representatives of different religious communities as well as the role of religious institutions as actors in daily life or in facing german authorities. Possible questions could also include the material culture of religion as for example: How were religious everyday culture and consumption impacted by different spatial and temporal settings of migration? To what extent were performances of religious practices affected in everyday life or changed in neighborhood contact?
The project uses microhistorical approaches as in the field of the history of Emotions as well as Oral History using narrative/biographical interviews with first- and second-generation migrants to be conducted in several communities in Hessen as well as in Greece. General information on the centre as well as a detailed description of the project can be found here: https://dynamiken-des-religioesen.uni-frankfurt.de/ausfuehrliche-projektbeschreibung
