GESIS – Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences is an internationally active research institute, funded by federal and state governments and member of the Leibniz Association.

Located in Mannheim or Cologne, starting at the earliest possible date we are looking for

2 Researchers (Postdocs) in Data Quality and AI

(salary group 13 TV-L, working time up to 100%, limited until 14.11.2026)

within the third party funded project “Competence Center Data Quality in the Social Sciences” (KODAQS).

The BMFTR-funded project KODAQS , GESIS and its partners the University of Mannheim and LMU Munich are establishing a data competence center for the social sciences that supports researchers in assessing, processing, and analyzing social science data in a variety of ways.

The advertised positions focus on the intersection of data quality and artificial intelligence (AI). One position will concentrate on AI methods for assessing survey data quality, while the other will focus on AI methods for assessing digital behavioral data quality.

The successful candidates will be affiliated either with the departments Computational Social Science (CSS) and Data Services for the Social Sciences (DSS) (for the digital behavioral data focus) or with the Survey Design and Methodology (SDM) department (for the survey data focus). Both positions include collaborations with other GESIS departments and external partners such as the University of Mannheim and LMU Munich.

Your tasks will be:

  • Conduct original research on data quality in either digital behavioral data (e.g., data from online platforms, web tracking, smartphone apps) or survey data, including the use of AI methods to assess data quality or evaluating the quality of AI methods themselves
  • Develop tools for assessing and measuring quality to contribute tothe KODAQStoolbox for data users
  • Design and develop training materials and deliver courses on data quality in digital behavioral or survey data, as well as on AI methods
  • Organize expert workshops, coordinate and collaborate with guest researchers
  • Communicate project outcomes through conferences, publications, blogs, and other outreach activities

Your profile:

  • Completed Master’s degree and completed or about-to-be-completed doctoral degree in Social Sciences or a related field (e.g., Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Data Science, Statistics)
  • Experience in collecting and analyzing either digital behavioral data (e.g., via APIs, web scraping, web tracking, data donations) or survey data
  • Strong interest in exploring data quality aspects of digital behavioral or survey data using AI methods, or in evaluating AI methods used for data quality assessment
  • Publication experience in peer-reviewed international journals or conference proceedings
  • Very good English skills; German skills are an advantage
  • Interdisciplinary project team at three locations (Mannheim, Cologne, and Munich) in direct cooperation with the University of Mannheim and LMU Munich
