Job description

Join our dedicated team at the City of Edmonton within Parks and Roads, Infrastructure Operations! We are seeking a dynamic individual for a dual role that combines hands-on leadership with essential maintenance operations. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the beautification and accessibility of Edmonton's sports fields and pathways, ensuring they are safe and enjoyable for all residents. This unique position functions as a Crew Leader during the prime sports field season (approximately April 15 - October 31) and transitions to a Labourer II for snow removal and maintenance during the winter months (approximately November 1 - April 14). As a Crew Leader, you will provide field-level supervision and hands-on leadership to crews responsible for sports field maintenance, organizing resources and ensuring programs meet established standards. In the Labourer II role, you will be crucial in supporting active pathway snow removal, ensuring public access and safety. This role requires adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and quality in all tasks.

What will you do?

As Crew Leader (approx. April 15 - October 31):

  • Provide hands-on supervision and leadership to deliver approved work plans for sports field maintenance
  • Set daily priorities and ensure appropriate crew and equipment are utilized for programs, meeting standards outlined in the Green Book
  • Ensure all employees are properly trained and work adheres to established safety policies and procedures
  • Forecast needs based on team talent and skills, and provide training on various equipment uses and functions
  • Exemplify and enable Cultural Commitments (Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, Excellent) and respectful workplace practices
  • Review, enter, and approve payroll, ensuring timeliness and accuracy
  • Assist in job interviews and conduct seasonal evaluations of staff
  • Provide continuous coaching, feedback, mentorship, and guidance to staff
  • Provide orientation and ongoing training to ensure staff are aware of policies and procedures
  • Maintain records, monitor staff certifications, create worksite logs, and report on completed work and variances
  • Ensure all City of Edmonton Occupational Health and Safety Standards and Enviso policies and procedures are followed and enforced

As Labourer II (approx. November 1 - April 14):

  • Perform manual labor for the Snow and Ice Program, including operating powered equipment (e.g., John Deere 72" with broom, toolcat, MT), shoveling, and maintaining a variety of inventory for public access
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures, environmental, and safety programs, and conduct daily Field Level Risk Assessments
  • Inspect and document all equipment for safety before use
  • Provide professional and respectful customer service and communicate with the public and other employees
  • Be available for potential 24/7 coverage
Qualifications

  • Two-year diploma in Turf Management. Equivalencies will be considered with relevant experience
  • Current Standard First Aid Level C certification
  • WHMIS certification
  • 3 years of related experience in a Parks Maintenance and Operations setting
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability
  • Minimum 3 years of experience operating various pieces of equipment and implements related to specific programs, including but not limited to John Deere tractors, John Deere 72" with broom, and Toolcat

Assets:

  • Experience with snowblowers, leaf blowers, and pressure washers
  • Familiarity with the City of Edmonton's "Green Book" standards

Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of PARS policies, procedures, and standards
  • Competency with Google programs
  • Effective communication skills with crew members and multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in PARS Sports Fields and Winter Operations
  • Ability to supervise, lead, coach, mentor, and guide crews
  • Ability to ensure compliance with City of Edmonton policies and procedures
  • Ability to represent the City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, respectful, and safe manner
  • Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and direct the work of staff
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment requiring cooperation and leadership skills
  • Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Enviso, and WHMIS
  • Ability to inspect and approve completed work based on task standards
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, and to follow written and oral instructions

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful applicants must be able to perform physical duties including standing, walking, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using feet for controls
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures (hot, cold), precipitation (rain, snow), brightness, darkness, noise, vibrations, chemicals, mechanical/electrical hazards, and working alone may be required
  • Mandatory use of protective equipment including safety footwear, hand protection (gloves), eye protection, skin protection (cream, sunscreen, coveralls), and respiratory protection
  • Ability to work shift work and potentially split shifts
  • This position falls under the SSI program which may require 24/7 coverage and availability to work rotating shifts
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position


Work Environment:

  • The work environment involves a combination of outdoor work across sports fields and pathways in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, and snow. The role requires significant physical activity and the operation of various equipment. You will be working both independently and as part of a team, interacting with the public and other City employees

Salary Range:

  • Crew Leader: $38.213 (Hourly); $79,788.740 (Annually)
  • Labourer II: $32.319 (Hourly); $67,482.070 (Annually)

Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CUPE and will be forthcoming shortly.
