Duties

Fire Crew Members are a fundamental part of our Fire Management Team. These individuals help carry out the field unit’s fire management programs through wildland fuel management, prescribed fires and wildfire suppression services.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill a term position, starting in July and ending in November 2024.

A qualifying list will be established, and may be used to fill similar positions of various tenures (temporary, full-time, part-time, As & When Required) in various locations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education :

A secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training, and experience in a field related to the position.

Experience :

  • Experience in working in remote areas for extended periods;
  • Experience working in a resource management field.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

Knowledge :

  • Personal Protective (PPE) and other related Occupational Health and Safety (OSH issues);
  • Fire management strategies and tactics.

Abilities :

  • Maintain supplied equipment in state of readiness;
  • Perform calmly and take direction under high stress;
  • Collect and record information;
  • Work safely and efficiently.

Personal Suitability :

  • Personally connects with others;
  • Takes responsibly;
  • Demonstrates integrity.

The following may be applied / assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job)

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION :

  • Minimum completion of two years of post-secondary education related to environmental and / or natural science (eg. Biology, ecology, forestry);
  • CIFFC Basic Fire management course (S-130) or equivalent;
  • ICS 100 and 200.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE :

  • Experience in fire suppression, including mop-up and patrol on multiple fires of various sizes and complexities;
  • Experience in fireline construction using hand tools, power tools and water delivery systems;
  • Experience with aircraft use (both fixed and rotary-wing) in fire management operations.

Operational Requirements :

  • Willing and able to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
  • Willing and able to work and / or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
  • Willing and able to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and / or statutory holidays and provincial / territorial holidays, when required;
  • Willing and able to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Reliability Status security clearance - All employees of the Federal Government are required to meet Reliability Status; details of the screening process and applications will be provided at the time of interviews.

Conditions of Employment (must be met prior to employment)

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver's license (Class L, N or other graduated licenses will not be accepted);
  • Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks, including :
  • Occupational Health Assessment for Firefighters
  • Meet and maintain certified status for Canadian physical performance exchange standard for type I Wildland fire fighters (WFX-FIT) in accordance with Canadian interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) requirements.
  • Possession and maintenance of a current Standard First Aid Certificate (minimum 40 hour course) and CPR certificate;
  • Eligible to be “hover exit” certified in a light or intermediate helicopter.
