EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY - SPEECH LANGUAGE THERAPIST ASSISTANT X2 ENOCH CREE NATION - KEA

OPEN COMPETITION
JOB PURPOSE

Speech Language Therapeutic Assistants (SLPA) are to assist in the education, development, and training of students, as well as to assist in maintaining a smooth and efficient operation of the school in general. SLPA’s must work under the supervision of our Speech Language Therapist, teacher, and/or administrator and take direction from the professional(s) to whom they are assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIREMENTS
  1. Assist students who may have special behavioural or intellectual needs.
  2. Support the instruction of students.
  3. Conduct hearing, speech, and language screenings.
  4. Run language therapy activities on a one-on-one or group basis according to treatment plans developed by the Speech-language Pathologist.
  5. Keep records of student progress and performance during sessions and provide feedback to the Speech-language Pathologist.
  6. Develop materials related to the student’s individual programs and strategies as determined by the Speech-language Pathologist.
  7. Assist with preparation for at-home programming, modeling, and monitoring.
  8. Assist the Speech-language Pathologist and classroom team by developing and maintaining detailed notes on student progress and response to current programs/strategies.
  9. Modify materials and teaching styles to meet individual student needs.
  10. Consult regularly with teachers, administrators, and inclusive education coordinators for the benefit of students.
  11. Follow the same code of conduct as certified teachers.
  12. Develop trusting relationships with children and involve family and community members in classroom activities.
  13. Supervise students in structured (classroom) and unstructured settings (hallway, recess, lunch).
  14. Report to immediate supervisor or Principal for duties.
  15. Support evaluation and reporting on students’ intellectual, social, behavioral, and academic progress.
  16. Maintain the daily attendance register when requested.
  17. Follow supervision schedules made by the administrator.
  18. Accompany and supervise classes or groups on excursions or field trips.
  19. Work with students in various academic subjects independently or in small groups.
  20. Assist teachers with classroom tasks as requested, supporting students and teachers in routines and discipline.
  21. Promote cultural awareness in the classroom, community, or during special activities.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Speech Language Assistant diploma from a recognized institution.
  • 1-3 years of experience related to pediatric work.
  • Knowledge of psychoeducational assessment, occupational therapy, and speech language recommendations.
  • Non Violent Crisis Intervention Training.
  • Police Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Knowledge of Cree Language is an asset.
  • Availability to work Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:00.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Work at the Enoch Cree Nation KEA building during an 8-hour shift, following ECN HR policies and procedures.
