Job Description
Position Summary
Responsible for maintenance, servicing and repairs of roads and other infrastructure assets. Maintain contracted assets (such as roadways, medians, signs, guardrails, fences, bridges, tunnels, vegetation, etc.) per contract standards and as directed by the supervisor. This role may be assigned to operations of equipment for winter as required. This position is represented by the Ontario Public Sector Employees Union (OPSEU) and is subject to the terms of the Collective Agreement.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Creates safe traffic control per OTM Book 7 by setup and removal of traffic control devices including cones, message/arrow boards, temporary signage, etc.
- Perform basic maintenance and repair of bridge structures and facilities including railings, expansion joints, doors, and painting as required.
- Repair/maintain drainage assets such as catch basins, sumps and pumps, and other mechanical assets with hand or power tools.
- Transport crew and equipment to work sites using large trucks and specialized vehicles and trailers.
- Carry out duties in line with Company policies and procedures as amended from time to time.
- Maintain and repair highway surfaces including potholes, striping, reflectors, and concrete/asphalt work.
- Maintain cleanliness of highways and medians; remove litter and debris; perform snow removal or sanding as required.
- Repair/maintain slopes, berms, culverts and drains with appropriate tools.
- Control vegetation growth using lawn mowing equipment, trimmers, and chemical sprayers.
- Maintain appearance and functionality of signs, guardrails, fences, and lighting through repair/replacement.
- Transport crew and equipment to work sites with appropriate vehicles.
- Be available for emergency response rotations including overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Contribute to a diverse, inclusive and fair work environment; comply with legal requirements; perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of infrastructure maintenance.
- Practice safe work methods to remain accident and injury free.
- Ability to recognize hazards and adjust to avoid loss, injury or accident.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the job.
- Cooperate and communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisor.
- Perform basic math and read, write and interpret safety and maintenance documents related to contractual requirements.
- Willingness to work flexibly and extensively to meet business needs.
- High attention to detail and taking ownership of responsibilities.
- Basic knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in concrete, asphalt repair, construction and maintenance.
- Skill in the use and care of small hand tools; ability to interface with the public professionally.
Education and Experience
- HS Diploma or GED (Required).
- One (1) year work experience in infrastructure, maintenance, and repair (Preferred).
- Valid driver license and a good driving record are required to drive a company vehicle. Class DZ/AZ licenses and OTM Book 7 are highly desirable.
Work Conditions / Physical Demands
Work Environment
Exposure to traffic and outdoor conditions, extreme temperatures, wet/humid conditions, high places, fumes or airborne particles. Potential exposure to chemicals, insects and occasional reptiles/rodents. Noise level typically moderate but can be higher.
Physical Demands
Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, lift up to 50 pounds, operate manual and powered tools, and work at heights or in confined spaces. Vision and respirator fit test requirements may apply where needed.
