The Opportunity

Reporting to the Supervisor, Water Treatment, this position is primarily responsible for the operation of the Bay Bulls Big Pond Water Treatment Plant and Regional System. Maintenance duties will be assigned on an as needed basis.

Accountabilities
  • Collect samples and interpret water analysis.
  • Replenish chemicals as required.
  • Perform plant process control analysis.
  • Monitor, evaluate and adjust water treatment process.
  • Evaluate characteristics of source water.
  • Must be able to interpret Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines and comply with drinking water regulations.
  • Compare treated water with Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.
  • Evaluate and maintain equipment, and perform housekeeping duties of all water facilities.
  • Perform security, and safety procedures.
  • Operate, maintain and repair equipment such as gas chlorinators, various water pumps, electro-pneumatic equipment, mechanical screens, pressure reducing valves, air compressors, pumps, fans, shafts, mechanical couplings, various mechanical drives, diesel engines, valves, piping, mechanical seals, and hot water heating systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance programs on plant equipment; basic gas welding, cutting & safe rigging.
  • Safely use and maintain shop tools and equipment and comply with all health and safety regulations.
  • Carry out inspections and keep records of operations and monitor activities in the protected watershed.
  • Other related duties including manual labour as directed by the supervisor.
  • Perform routine janitorial servicing of the main control room, ozone rooms and all other chemical areas.
Qualifications

Graduation from high school supplemented by the successful completion of a Journeyman Certificate in a related trade, preferably as a Millwright, and have a minimum of five (5) years experience in this field. The successful applicant must also possess a minimum of Level III certification in Water Treatment Operations. Appointments may be made of an applicant who possesses a certificate lower than Level III in Water Treatment Operations provided they can meet the Provincial requirements to obtain a Level III certificate in Water Treatment Plant Operations. Preference will be given to the Red Seal Journeyperson candidate with Level III Certification in Water Treatment Process.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to effectively perform maintenance and repairs to various water treatment plant equipment and systems such as, but not limited to, chlorine systems, ozone disinfection systems, oxygen generation systems, carbon dioxide systems, dual media rapid gravity filters, and pH adjustment systems.

The City’s selection procedure may include testing and does include a requirement that the successful candidate pass a medical and physical assessment. Must possess a valid Class 5 Drivers License.

This position is considered safety-sensitive.

Hours of Work

Regular hours of work are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm / 4:00 pm – 12:00 am (80 hours bi-weekly). Work schedule is subject to change periodically and may include 8 or 12 hour shifts, including weekends. Must be available to work full or partial shifts as required.
