Job description
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is seeking a Travelling Public Health Nurse (PHN) for a part‑time, 0.6 FTE contract from Dec 2025 to Nov 2 2026. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to serve diverse communities while enjoying flexibility and comprehensive travel support. Reporting to the Manager, Oral Health and District Offices, the Public Health Nurse will deliver public health programs and services on health promotion, protection and maintenance, disease and injury prevention, and community participation and development. Public Health Nursing practice is based on the model of primary health prevention and is population focused. The role will be based in the District of Thunder Bay with regular travel to Geraldton.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing programs and community‑wide initiatives using current knowledge of public health practices and trends.
- Acts as a Public Health Nursing consultant to other professionals and community groups.
- Acts as a resource person to communities, groups, individuals and peers.
- Provides health education, counseling, support and advocates for healthy public policy and legislation while working within the policies of the program and those of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
- Establishes effective working relations with peers, appropriate professional agencies and community groups.
- Participates on interagency committees or community coalitions as appropriate.
- Facilitates community development and community mobilization.
- Identifies local health issues, needs and participates in population‑needs‑based health planning and evaluation.
- Initiates and collaborates on research opportunities and integrates research findings into Public Health Nursing practice.
- Identifies funding opportunities and assists in the development of proposals, including public awareness/social marketing campaigns.
- Functions as a preceptor to students assigned for fieldwork practice and/or observation.
- Contributes to the development and implementation of the Nursing Department Strategic Plan and annual program operational plan.
- Maintains competence relevant to current practice and trends in public health by participating in continuing education opportunities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements
- Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses in Ontario.
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an approved university with identifiable community health nursing content.
- Current CPR Certificate.
- Proficiency in computer and word‑processing skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Advanced oral and written proficiency in French may be required in designated postings.
- Required to provide the use of an automobile as per signed employment agreement.
- May be required to work irregular hours.
- May be expected to periodically travel within the district.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license.
