Role

The Transport Operator is responsible for the safe operation of IEMS vehicles and movement of clients/patients requiring assistance. The Transport Operator must constantly monitor clients/patients and exercise tact, diplomacy and customer service. The role may involve heavy traffic and congested streets. The operator must remain alert, manage personal well-being for long drives, operate during peak periods and cope with adverse weather, construction and traffic conditions. This position includes providing first aid services as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Safe and prudent operation of IEMS vehicle.
  • Support and assist clients/patients while loading and unloading from the vehicle.
  • Safely moving patients from bed to stretcher/wheelchair or while moving on stretcher or wheelchair.
  • Interact professionally with employees of IEMS and stakeholders.
  • Operate all system and company vehicles in accordance with Prince Edward Island laws and all applicable Policies and Procedures and Safe Work Practices of IEMS.
  • Complete all work-related documentation required by management within the required time frames.
  • Maintain ongoing cleanliness of vehicle, station, and/or premises during scheduled shift.
  • Demonstrate good hygiene and provide customer service to clients, family members, other emergency services, colleagues and the general public.
  • Display decision-making capability and take initiative as needed.
  • Operate communications equipment and interact with the Medical Communication Centre as needed.
  • Practice effective infection control measures including use of personal protective equipment.
  • Check and visually inspect vehicle daily and perform pre-trip checks.
  • Drive defensively and follow traffic laws at all times.
  • Assess and monitor vehicle operating conditions and report issues.
  • Monitor passengers to ensure their safety and contact the Medical Communications Centre for assistance as needed.
  • Maintain a high degree of discretion and confidentiality as transport of clients/passengers falls within our Privacy mandate.
  • Perform other similar or related duties as required.
  • Provide medical assistance as directed by the attending paramedic.
Qualifications
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid Class 4 driver\'s license with the province of Prince Edward Island (or equivalent) or willing to obtain prior to hire date.
  • Medical First Responder or Advanced First Aid training is an asset.
  • Safe driving record and Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector prior to hiring.
  • Criminal record check including a vulnerable sector check will be required.
  • Additional courses in driver education are an asset.
  • Experience transporting clients; larger vehicles is an asset.
  • Must pass a physical abilities test prior to employment for lifting and moving patients.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Good judgment, decision making and problem solving in daily operations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Proof of vaccination status for Measles, Mumps and Hepatitis B.
  • Positive attitude, excellent time management, planning and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to handle confidentiality and sensitive issues with tact and discretion.
  • Ability to follow directions from the attending paramedic.
Salary

$22.73 - $25.50 Hourly, + 12% in lieu of benefits
