JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Thermal Operating Technician at our Lennox facility in Bath, Ontario.

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Engineer and supervision of the Thermal Operating Supervisor/Shift Engineer, the Thermal Operating Technician is responsible for carrying out all operating, monitoring, and reporting activities, common and auxiliary equipment and systems associated with large high-pressure boilers and turbo-alternator units to meet station procedural and regulatory compliance. This role will be primarily on a rotating shift basis.

When required, the Thermal Operating Technician will perform the function of Assistant Shift Engineer as defined by Operating Engineers Regulation.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Carry out operating and monitoring activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of all assigned units, common and auxiliary equipment, and systems, including but not limited to process systems, feed water, fuel, chemical, water treatment plant, emission control systems, and pumps, screens, fans, etc. Recognize abnormalities, inefficiencies, and hazards, analyze, troubleshoot, and take corrective action.
  • Perform all aspects of work protection code (WPC) activities to the level trained and act as controlling/issuing authority of assigned equipment when required.
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team, with responsibilities including wearing a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus when needed and undergoing training in firefighting, confined space rescue, chemical spill response, and First Aid/CPR response.
  • Carry out various measurements and tests on equipment, systems, and processes according to recognized standards and procedures.
  • Plan, control, and execute all phases of unit start-ups, including pre-start checks of equipment and systems.
  • Ensure appropriate actions are taken during unit or bulk electricity system emergencies, ensuring proper integration of all phases of unit start-ups.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned emergency equipment to ensure its operational readiness.
  • Prepare reports and maintain appropriate documentation for audit and reference purposes, using light hand tools to perform minor maintenance while being accountable for the health, safety, and well-being of self and others, in accordance with technical/operating procedures and standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a 3rd class Operating Engineer (OE) Certificate valid in the province of Ontario as a minimum requirement. *
  • Proficient in the use of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, and Outlook);
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills and able to work in a team environment with other trades and operators;
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization;
  • Must be able to work shifts or days as needed

*Candidates pursuing or that hold a 2nd class OE Certificate are highly desirable
