Overview

Veolia North America is integrating the City of Montreal’s Waste Treatment Plan by taking over the operation, maintenance, and management of the new Montreal‑East Biomethanization Centre (BEST). The centre will convert 60,000 tonnes of organic waste per year into biomethane, using organic matter from Montreal residents.

Position Summary

The biomethanization plant technician operates the plant in accordance with regulatory requirements, safety practices, and operating manuals, from the receipt of organic materials to the production of biomethane and the shipment of effluent and digestate.

Responsibilities
  • Operate the plant in accordance with instructions, operating procedures and operating manuals.
  • Monitor and adjust the operating parameters necessary for the plant process on site and via the SCADA system.
  • Carry out the measurements, readings and observations necessary for the operation and maintenance of the plant.
  • Start, adjust, stop and clean the equipment.
  • Operate the biological and chemical process and manage the logistics of the products.
  • Develop, troubleshoot and address anomalies according to their degree of urgency and the priorities defined by the production supervisor.
  • Ensure safe use of the telescopic handling device, handling machine with a grapple, forklift and articulated boom lift.
  • Receive organic matter on site and off‑site disposal of waste and digestate.
  • Place organic materials in the storage area and feed the crushers using the handling machine.
  • Perform a quick inspection of organic materials upon receipt.
  • Participate in the collection of samples for the laboratory when necessary.
  • Carry out interventions requested by the production supervisor, including locking of equipment, parameterization, reagent preparation, measurements, product introduction, cleaning tasks and more.
  • Recommend improvements and resolve identified problems.
  • Analyze breakdowns, unforeseen events and propose solutions to the production supervisor.
  • Monitor the interventions of subcontractors and suppliers and collect intervention and delivery reports.
  • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly reports, incident reports and other documents according to internal needs and contractual requirements.
  • Complete the logbook weekly and coordinate critical information with the operator of the next shift and the production supervisor.
  • Participate in the improvement and optimization of the factory’s operations.
  • Work with the maintenance coordinator to plan maintenance activities.
  • Participate in company training and development programs.
  • Promote a positive, harmonious, respectful and safe work environment.
  • Actively participate in the quality, health and safety and environmental approach.
  • Apply site and corporate rules, instructions and procedures regarding quality, health and safety and environment.
  • Participate and collaborate in audits related to occupational safety and investigate workplace accidents and near misses.
  • Perform all other related tasks connected with the job.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • A DEC in Water Treatment or in Biomethanization or an AEC in Biomethanization and Composting Techniques would be an asset.
  • A DEC in Chemical Processes or Chemical Engineering or equivalent would be an asset.
  • A vocational diploma in stationary machine mechanics (MMF) would be a very great asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in an industrial plant, preferably in biomethanization, water and wastewater treatment, petrochemicals or a related field.
  • Holding the ASP Construction health and safety card is an advantage.
  • Possess Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status or a work permit issued by the competent federal authority to work in Quebec.
  • Demonstrate an interest in teamwork and respect for standards.
  • Demonstrate a high level of proactivity.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to collaborate, take responsibility and a high degree of autonomy.

Work Environment

Permanent, full‑time position with day or evening/night shifts, 12 hours per shift, weekdays and weekends. The successful candidate must be flexible and available during high production periods.
