Job description
POSITION SUMMARY

After progression to "Skilled", and under the general supervision of the Operations & Maintenance Supervisor and the technical direction and guidance of the Lead Operator, performs maintenance, repair and replacement of storm and water distribution and wastewater collection subsystems.

MAJOR TASKS
  • Performs maintenance, repair and replacement work on the water distribution system, including services, mains, valves, hydrants, and other related fixtures.
  • Performs maintenance, repair and replacement work on the water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including house connections, manholes, catch basins, sewers, and related fixtures.
  • Operates jackhammers, rock drills, power driven saws, pumps, steamers, and other work‑related equipment.
  • Operates trucks up to a "DZ" level.
  • Fills out time cards, water and sewer reports and forms. Marks in proper account distribution.
  • Reports materials used as required.
  • Reports equipment and material defects as required.
  • Performs stand‑by duties as required.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education / Experience
  • Grade 12 or equivalent as per the Ministry of the Environment certification guidelines
  • Must possess a valid passing grade on the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator in Training exam.
Skills / Abilities
  • Must be able to understand water distribution and wastewater collection maps and construction drawings
  • Must have mechanical aptitude
  • Must be capable of reporting (written or verbal) on WD/WWC systems conditions or problems
  • Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions
  • Must be tactful and courteous with the public
  • Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “D” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent with a ‘Z’ endorsement
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Within 3 years of hire, must complete mandatory entry level drinking water operator course for operators in training
  • Within 5 years of hire, must possess and maintain a Class I Water Operator Certificate in Water Distribution Subsystems and a Class I Wastewater Operator Licence for Wastewater Collection Facilities
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
  • Must be able to meet the response times for Standby as stipulated in the Environment Divisions Standard Operating Procedures
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and with sewage
  • Must be physically capable to perform the duties of the position
  • Must work weekends and shifts as required
