Job description
Overview

Our client is seeking an Operations Manager in the Fort McMurray region who will be responsible for directing and overseeing all aspects of mechanical repair and maintenance shop operations. The successful candidate will lead Heavy Duty, Light Duty, and Wash Bay teams, while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality service delivery. This role requires strong leadership skills, technical expertise in mechanical trades, and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, team members, and senior leadership.

This role works a regular Monday to Friday schedule during office hours, with flexibility to respond to urgent operational needs. The successful candidate will hold an Inter-Provincial Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification (dual ticket in Heavy Equipment & Automotive Service Technician preferred), combined with 3 to 5 years of senior managerial experience in a mechanical repair and maintenance environment. The role also requires excellent communication skills, strong computer proficiency, a proven safety-first mindset, and the ability to mentor and support a diverse team.

How You\'ll Move the Needle

The successful candidate will be able and ready to support the organization in the following areas.

Operations
  • Audit completed work orders, and ensure all technicians complete paperwork accurately as per standards.
  • Ensure all work orders are billed accurately as per standards.
  • Uphold and communicate conduct standards and operational expectations to employees.
  • Initiate and deliver corrective action related to conduct, performance, safety, and attendance standards.
  • Review job description with all new hires and when deemed necessary with existing employees.
  • Manage, develop, and support all levels of staff.
  • Implement and maintain policies, processes, procedures, and systems of operations with a focus on quality, continuous improvement, and efficiency.
  • Establish and maintain successful working relationships with clients and partners.
  • Assist in identifying adequate workforce requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory procedures and guidelines.
  • Responsible for ensuring work performed is conducted in accordance with industry and OH&S standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) regulations.
  • Direct reporting in the form of shop inspections and documentation requirements as per compulsory trade legislation.
  • Export training reports and proactively schedule corporate training, safety training, or other training deemed necessary.
  • Provide coverage for Lead hand technicians and oversee specialty work as needed.
  • Enforce and instill a safety culture in all aspects of the business.
  • Collaborate with leadership on special projects, business opportunities, and other prospects.
  • Purchase equipment and supplies as authorized by senior management.
  • Conduct probationary and annual performance reviews in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of delivering full services.
  • Perform interim duties in General Manager\'s absence.
Safety
  • Ensure personnel wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct worksite safety observations and inspections.
  • Coordinate the completion of orientations, safety and / or other training deemed necessary during onboarding.
  • Conduct incident investigations through completion of Loss Control Reports (LCR\'s) and assist leaders when required.
  • Complete all administration duties related to safety reporting.
  • Ensure all employees are fit for duty.
  • Attend, participate, and lead toolbox talks and safety meetings as scheduled.
  • Adhere and enforce safety guidelines, policies, and procedures as set forth by legislation and safety programs.
  • Actively participate in the safety program and maintain strict adherence to OH\&S guidelines.
Knowledge
  • Be familiar with corporate and safety policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Trade specific knowledge as per certification(s).
  • Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program.
  • Adhere to and follow the requirements of ISO 9001 : 2015 and 14001 : 2015 Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Promote customer surveys.
  • Ensure customer requirements are met.
  • Identify and record non-conformances on Service Control Reports (SCR\'s).
  • Ensure updated customer contact lists are maintained and accessible.
Performance Standards
  • Maintain a Total Recordable Injury Frequency (TRIF) rating of zero.
  • Model desired behaviours appropriate to the work environment including punctuality, regular attendance, professionalism, and customer service.
  • Maintain prescribed reliability and quality measures as part of ISO standards.
  • Meet all deadlines and perform duties as indicated by the General Manager.
  • Identify operational efficiencies within the company and shop.
  • Adhere to code of conduct policies and remain professional and respectful during stressful times.
  • Ensure policies in relation to Confidentiality and Code of Conduct are adhered to.
  • Continuously maintain compliance to established Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
What You Need to Succeed

We are looking for a candidate that demonstrates the following abilities and traits :

  • Inter-Provincial Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification.
  • Dual ticket preferred, RSE Heavy Equipment & Automotive Service Technician.
  • 3 to 5 years\' experience in senior managerial roles.
  • Solution driven, strong interpersonal skills, ability to work in teams, flexibility to adapt to evolving business needs.
  • Sensitive to issues of confidentiality and compliance.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Physically fit to perform all duties of the job including heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, standing, climbing, squatting, and carrying.
  • Valid Class 5 operator\'s license with a clean abstract.
  • Class 1 or Class 3 Licence with Air Brakes is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills including Maintenance Management Software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to details.
  • Ability to work, train, and mentor apprentices.
  • Have a "safety-first" attitude.
