Job Description

Position Purpose Summary

The role operationally supports the Store Manager in overseeing daily routine tasks to provide uninterrupted service in various aspects of the Thrift Store activities. Otherwise, this role acts as a Sales Associate.

Responsibilities
  • Interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales.
  • Contribute to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
  • Open and close the store following store procedures when required.
  • Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, pricing and storing donations.
  • Possess knowledge of stock to respond to customer inquiries by phone/in person.
  • Monitor activity within the store to maintain security.
  • Handle merchandise in a safe and organized manner; assist in stock rotation.
  • Assist with inventory control by receiving, sorting, and pricing as directed.
  • Assist with store layout plans to attract customers, including window and merchandise displays; maintain an attractive store through tidiness.
  • Replenish inventory levels based on supervisor’s directions and remove inventory from sales floor as directed.
  • Maintain proper sorting and processing of donated goods according to quality standards.
  • Maintain an attractive, organized appearance of the store; tidy up and restock shelves; clean as needed.
  • Abide by store policy and procedures; assist with inventory reconciliation (cycle counting).
  • Provide excellent service to guests and donors.
  • Act as a Team Lead / Working Supervisor for Store Associates in the absence of the Store Manager.
  • May provide on-the-job training to staff and show others how to perform certain procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment in compliance with Health & Safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Internal/External Relationships

Internal: NRO Administration, TS management and staff.

External: Donors, clients, contractors.

Managerial/Technical & Financial Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Store Manager. Direct reports: None. May show others how to perform procedures; moderate material responsibility; may occasionally handle petite cash.

Working Conditions

This is a permanent full-time position.

  • Normal store environment.
  • Constant physical effort (stretching, lifting up to 30 pounds with no assistance, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking).
  • Frequent exposure to fumes and dust and temperature fluctuations.
  • Adherence to deadlines; frequent interpersonal interactions with guests, donors, vendors, and employees.
  • Work is varied with periods of repetitious tasks.
Education, Experience & Qualifications
  • Willingness to support the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and implications for position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Education, Certifications & Experience
  • Completion of some high school.
  • Two years of experience in a store or warehouse environment.
Skills & Capabilities
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Physically capable of lifting/carrying up to 30 lbs frequently with no assistance, including bending and pulling/pushing of product.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $18.14 to $22.68 with a maximum of $27.22. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
