Sessional Lecturer - VCC304H5S Visual Culture and the Politics of Identity

Course number and title: VCC304H5 Visual Culture and the Politics of Identity

Topic description: Examines the ways in which social-cultural identities are constructed by, and at times disrupt, various visual technologies, logics, and representational strategies. Issues and problems to be addressed include nationality, stereotyping, invisibility, and surveillance. Course materials will be drawn from modern and contemporary art and visual culture, and will also include readings from the fields of feminism, race studies, queer theory, and performance studies.

Class schedule: Monday 11:00-13:00

Sessional dates of appointment: January 5 - April 6, 2026

Responsibilities
  • Design and teach a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course material.
  • Prepare and deliver assignments, tests and/or exams, supervise teaching assistants, and mark students’ work.
  • Submit grades to university officials and hold regular office hours.
  • Coordinate scheduling of guest speakers (limited to one week class session).
Qualifications
  • Minimum qualifications: An MA in a related field is required along with demonstrated mastery of the subject area.
  • Experience as a sole responsibility course instructor is an asset.
