    Description:

This course is designed for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators and professional practitioners. It examines Indigenous perspectives on trauma-informed classrooms and pedagogical contexts in both urban and rural K-12 contexts in Canada and more generally across Turtle Island (North America). It focuses on Indigenous peoples' experiences of trauma and its impacts on family, community and children and youth in K-12 classrooms. Students will develop an understanding of Indigenous practices of care that include the complex interplay of various aspects of colonialism and its implications for trauma-informed care in classrooms. Historical, social, and political issues as well as themes related to culturally and spiritually safe care will be examined in relation to Indigeneity, the diversity of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island, and the ways we are all implicated in colonial relations of power and privilege. This course will open up discussions about what this means to our practices and why it is important - here, now in this time.
