Course description: This course will examine the role of anthropology in the development, maintenance, as well as critique, of race as a concept and racism as a social, cultural, and structural reality. Topics include: the relationships among anthropology, race, and colonialism; the constructions of race as a social, cultural, and biological concept; ethnographic engagements with whiteness and white supremacy; and the future of anthropology as an anti‑racist and anti‑colonialist enterprise.
Prerequisite: ANT207H1
Estimated course enrolment: 65 students
Estimated TA support: 80 hours
Class schedule: Thursdays 1‑3 pm, Classes begin January 5 and end April 6, 2026
Delivery method: in person
Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2026 to January 31, 2026 (with the possibility of extension)
Salary (per Sessional Lecturer level):
Note: Salary will be prorated to reflect length of appointment. Rates stipulated in the collective agreement prevail.
All duties associated with teaching an undergraduate course, including preparing the course outline, syllabus and lectures, delivering lectures, developing, marking and administering course assignments, tests and exams, holding regular office hours.
