Responsibilities
- Plan and implement economic development projects for new policies / programs / investments and / or the evaluation / change / servicing of existing policy / programs / clients
- Monitor, research and analyze information and advise on issues affecting the sector's competitiveness
- Lead the development and maintenance of relationships with stakeholders including companies, sector organizations, other Ministries and other levels of government
- Work with sector, government stakeholders to reduce barriers to businesses, economic / sector development and to negotiate contentious issues with internal / external clients
- Work with potential investors (domestic and international) and support initiatives that result in new / expanded investments
- Prepare strategic advice such as presentations and briefing notes and present to senior management on issues affecting stakeholders
- Develop / implement consultations within the Ministry, government and external organizations to exchange information on policy goals / initiatives / investments
- Represent the Ministry / Ontario Government at internal / external meetings, conferences (domestic and international), seminars and other events as requested
What you bring to the team
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- Interpersonal skills and relationship management, negotiation and consultation techniques to lead / participate in engagement activities with external stakeholders and other jurisdictions, and to foster positive relationships / partnerships
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to provide advice and strategic recommendations to senior management and clients, represent the ministry and province at sector, inter-ministry and intergovernmental meetings and lead the preparation and presentation of reports, proposals, options papers, briefing documents and other materials
- Experience using computer systems / software / networks / databases (e.g. Excel, Word, Internet / Intranet)
Technical Knowledge
- Knowledge of sector and trends and their linkages to the broader Ontario economy and identify opportunities associated with disruptive technologies
- Understanding of domestic and international markets as they apply to the development of growth, investment and attraction opportunities in Ontario
- Ability to evaluate research findings and analyze, develop, recommend and present strategies for changing programs / policies or initiating new economic development programs / policies / investments
- Ability to perform economic, financial and business analysis both at the sector and firm level
- Knowledge of government economic priorities, programs, operations, decision-making and policy processes, and program implementation and evaluation methods
- Knowledge of issues and trends in public policies / programs and understanding of government's philosophy and approach related to economic development
Project Management Skills
- Knowledge of project management principles and processes to design, plan and provide leadership to projects and implementation plans, which integrate a range of fiscal, economic, political and market factors and data; ability to manage competing tasks and priorities against short timelines
Analytical and Research Skills
- Analytical and evaluative skills to identify data and information required, interpret findings and assess their implication / significance for program and sector issues
- Ability to demonstrate reasoning skills to assess, interpret and evaluate a range of external / stakeholder issues and concerns
- Ability to solve problems and develop options and recommendations on program directions
- Knowledge of research tools and techniques to design and carry out research assignments, market / sector scans and detailed SWOT analyses and gather and conduct analyses of data
