Purpose
The primary purpose of the Senior Principal Telecommunication Engineer role specializing in Structured Cabling Systems is to serve as a technical authority designing and delivering structured cabling infrastructure for industrial projects across Oil & Gas, Mining, Power, and Chemical sectors. The role provides technical leadership during all phases of design and supports construction and commissioning activities, leading the architecture and overall engineering of fiber optic networks and horizontal cabling design to ensure safe, reliable, and scalable solutions aligned with customer and project needs.
This is a full‑time hybrid position based at a Worley office in Canada (Calgary/Edmonton or Sudbury) or the United States (Houston, Phoenix, or Denver). Other locations across the US and Canada will also be considered.
Overall Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
Pre‑FEED / FEED and Detailed Design
- Define high‑level architecture/topologies, block diagrams, and physical infrastructure requirements.
- Develop basis of design, project philosophies, and technology roadmaps.
- Estimate cabling and supporting infrastructure quantities, space and power requirements, and develop associated reports.
- Produce engineering deliverables including design criteria and specifications, FEED‑Level cable routing plans, cabinet layouts, equipment room layouts, and load list.
- Develop bill of materials, material take‑offs, and technical input to TIC cost estimates.
- Identify and coordinate connectivity requirements with Automation, Electrical, IT, and other networks.
- Develop FEED reports.
- Lead the development of IFC drawing packages including cable routing layouts, splicing and termination diagrams, wiring diagrams, cabinet details, floor plans, installation details, EWPs, CWPs, vendor scope of work, and material requisitions.
- Review vendor documents and coordinate the development of vendor packages.
- Ensure constructability, maintainability, and operability in all deliverables.
Multi‑Discipline Coordination and Procurement Support
- Interface with various project teams internally and externally (Automation, Electrical, IT, Operations, etc.) to ensure alignment of telecom infrastructure requirements.
- Provide technical guidance to project managers, designers, drafters, and junior engineers.
- Resolve engineering issues with stakeholders across client, vendor, EPC, and construction contractors.
- Prepare and evaluate technical specifications, datasheets, and material requisitions for structured cabling materials including fiber optic and copper cables, equipment racks/cabinets, patch panels, splicing enclosures, among others.
- Review vendor proposals and ensure compliance with project specifications and standards.
- Perform technical bid evaluations.
- Lead or participate in FATs, SATs, and inspections when required.
Construction and Commissioning Support
- Provide technical assistance during construction and respond to RFIs.
- Review contractor installation procedures and test plans (OTDR testing, insertion loss, Ethernet cabling certification, etc.).
- Support commissioning team with system turn‑up, testing, and validation documentation.
Leadership and Client Engagement
- Leverage and help develop the diverse background and skills of people for the attainment of company goals.
- Plan and execute projects through teamwork with other departments and external organizations.
- Identify gaps and build an environment with readily accessible knowledge and continuous learning.
- Support talent development and contribute to building discipline capability within the organization.
- Participate in communities of practice and knowledge‑sharing initiatives.
- Support proposals and bids by preparing technical write‑ups, execution strategies, engineering estimates, and risk assessments.
- Identify opportunities for technology optimization, standardization, and cost improvements.
- Contribute to client presentations and demonstrations.
What You Will Bring
Technical and Industry Experience
- Experience in industrial operations: Mining, Oil & Gas, Power, and Chemical industries.
- Expertise in Structured Cabling System design and implementation.
- Exposure to OT networks, industrial networking, and integration with Automation systems.
- Familiarity with EPC/EPCM project delivery environments.
- Conversant in system designs for access control, surveillance CCTV, VoIP telephony, private LTE/5G, 2‑Way Radio, Public Address & General Alarm systems (PAGA), Wi‑Fi systems on IP networks, and other telecommunication services.
- Knowledgeable in UIT‑T, UIT‑R, TIA, IEEE, ISO/IEC, NFPA, and CSA standards.
- Experienced in conceptual, basic, and detailed engineering and implementation of high‑availability fiber optic network architectures in industrial environments.
- Field experience in deployment and/or operations of telecommunication systems.
- Field experience in the commissioning of telecommunication systems.
- Experience with various telecommunications systems and networking products.
- Experience in various phases of vendor and technology selection.
- Experience in inspection and testing of equipment (FAT, SAT, and system walk‑downs).
- Experience in equipment installation requirements.
- Fluent in English (read, write, and speak).

Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training
- Recognized Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Must have or be eligible to obtain a P.Eng. (Canada) or P.E. (U.S.) license.
- BICSI RCDD certification will be considered an asset.
- PMP certification or other forms of project‑management training will be considered an asset.
