Job description
Overview

Bring your traffic expertise and highway engineering knowledge to the forefront. The Traffic Engineering team is looking for a Senior Engineer to lead complex projects, shape policy, and drive innovation in traffic safety and operations across Ontario’s transportation network.

In this position, you will:

  • Develop, review, and implement policies, standards, specifications for traffic operations, traffic control devices and systems and highway safety initiatives.
  • Provide engineering expertise to regions, consultants and external partners on traffic control, traffic operations and traffic control devices and systems.
  • Manage transportation projects and provide engineering, technical and administrative direction to staff and consultants.
  • Review new technology applications and external activities to ensure compatibility / compliance.

Please Note:

The successful candidate can work from any of the posted locations with the expectation that travel throughout the province may be required for operational reasons.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements:

  • You are licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s / he has a valid driver’s license upon being hired
Highway Traffic Engineering Knowledge
  • You understand civil engineering principles related to highway safety and traffic engineering.
  • You’re familiar with traffic operations, safety standards, and regulations at local, national, and international levels.
  • You can apply policy development and project management expertise to improve standards and lead complex initiatives.
  • You know about roadside safety, lighting, and traffic flow.
  • You understand how to plan and implement legislative and regulatory changes affecting traffic and safety.
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
  • You have strong planning and organizational skills to coordinate projects simultaneously.
  • You have experience in policy development and managing complex projects.
  • You have strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve problems, develop engineering proposals and assess ministry policy implementation in terms of project delivery and resource utilization.
  • You have advanced engineering and mathematical skills and knowledge of capacity calculations, complex intersection and signalised intersection operations.
Communication Skills
  • You have strong oral communication skills to provide information, act as an expert on engineering and technical matters, and deliver training.
  • You have strong written communication skills to write technical reports and manuals using computer software and traffic engineering software.
Interpersonal and Relationship Management Skills
  • You have developed relationship management skills to work with colleagues, all levels of management and the public.
  • You utilize strong interpersonal skills to develop new policies, standards and procedures, and provide guidance to various stakeholders.
