Qualifications

Duties
- Provide nursing care consistent with College Standards, supportive of patient treatment and rehabilitation goals for individuals with mental illness who conflict with the law.
- Develop and implement, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary treatment team, creative treatment plans tailored to individual needs.
- Identify and coordinate services and resources in partnership with affiliates and community organizations, advocating for the rights and entitlements of those in care.
- Lead and supervise nursing staff in daily tasks, ensuring standards are met.
- Manage care for assigned patients, including crisis situations.
- Recognize and respond to emergent health issues.
- Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment, including acute nursing care, crisis management, and stabilization.
- Prepare and administer medications according to policies and procedures.
- Apply the Mental Health Act and relevant legislation in psychiatric nursing practice.
- Coordinate medical referrals and facilitate follow-up care.
- Serve as a group facilitator for adult education sessions.
- Operate in compliance with safety policies and procedures.
- Promote a workplace free from racism, harassment, and discrimination.
- Assist with symptom management, including medication administration and clinical relationships.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse in Ontario is required.
- BScN degree preferred.
- Certification in psychiatric/mental health nursing is an asset.
- Understanding of the Mental Health Act and related legislation.
- Knowledge and skills aligned with the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice.
- Completion of mandatory education standards (CPR, WHMIS, Fire Safety, Evacuation Training).
- CPI and ASSIST training considered an asset.
- Meet the College of Nurses of Ontario nursing practice standards.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to foster an interdisciplinary team approach.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check (vulnerable sector).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation (Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decision Act, PHIPA, CSA) and ability to incorporate into practice.
- Proficiency in English; bilingual skills are an asset.
