Detailed Overview

The Recreation Therapist is accountable to the Manager, Health Services and is responsible for creating a place of learning, healing and caring in accordance with the mission, values and goals of Fraser Health. The Recreation Therapist develops, administers, supervises and evaluates therapeutic recreation and social programs designed to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of the residents; conducts standardized individualized assessments of each resident and develops appropriate therapeutic recreationcare plans; supervises activity staff and monitors and evaluates volunteers.

Responsibilities
  1. Develops goals and objectives, policies and procedures for the Recreation Therapy program.
  2. Conducts a standardized individual assessment of each resident and develops an appropriate therapeutic recreation care plan; reassesses as required.
  3. Utilizes the individual assessments to develop, plan, organize, coordinate, implement, monitor and evaluate a wide range of therapeutic recreation and social programs designed to meet resident needs.
  4. Ensures space, supply and staffing requirements are met for each program. Conducts program activities as appropriate.
  5. Participates in the selection of staff by providing input to the Manager; orientatesnew staff and others.
  6. Supervises program staff includingscheduling and coordinatingwork assignments;provides input intoemployee performance evaluations and identifies/arranges for education of staff.
  7. Administers and accounts for thetherapeutic recreation supplies budget. Maintains and orders supplies, operating within designated financial limits. Organizes fundraising activities.
  8. Orientates, assigns, monitors and evaluates volunteers. Develops volunteer assignment and duty descriptions. Liaises with other Volunteer Coordinators in the community. Plans and implements volunteer appreciation activities.
  9. Attends and provides reports to regularly scheduled care conferences. Charts weekly. Participates in staff/team meetings. Consults and coordinates activities with other staff (e.g. Music Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and Nursing). Coordinates and liaises with community agencies and outside resources to facilitate programming.
  10. Monitors the inventory of therapeutic recreation equipment and supplies.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Therapy, plus two years' recent, related experience. Eligible for membership in the B.C. Therapeutic Recreation Association.
