Job summary

A leading engineering company in Calgary seeks an R&D Engineer/Technologist to support product design and development. The role entails designing specialized equipment using 3D CAD software, preparing engineering documentation, and conducting product testing in both lab and field environments. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills in materials and stress mechanics along with proficiency in various engineering tools. A degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred, along with relevant industry experience. This position may require some travel and flexible working hours depending on project demands.

Qualifications

  • 2-5 years’ experience in research and development or design engineering.
  • Experience in oil and gas with knowledge in down hole tool design.

Responsibilities

  • Design, modify and troubleshoot specialized equipment using 3D CAD software.
  • Direct construction of new products and equipment.
  • Produce technical documentation for products including parts and assembly drawings.
  • Evaluate products using analytical models and software analysis.
  • Conduct hands-on work in all stages of product development.

Summary

The R&D Engineer / Technologist supports product design, research, and development. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Engineering, this role works with a multidisciplinary team to develop new equipment, improve existing products, and assist manufacturing. Responsibilities include preparing engineering documentation, using manufacturing/business systems, and participating in problem‑solving studies for product improvements. The role also performs product testing in lab and field environments, with some travel required. Flexibility in work hours is preferred due to fluctuating project demands, and assigned projects are expected to be completed effectively.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Design, modify and troubleshoot specialized equipment and products using 3D CAD software
  • Design manufacturing aids for machining, welding and assembly used in the production of various products
  • Directing the construction of new products and equipment
  • Research local codes, guidelines, and design criteria for the development of products and equipment
  • Produce technical documentation for products including parts drawings, assembly drawings, exploded views, sale drawings etc.
  • Evaluating the assembly, performance and design of new products or equipment.
  • Reporting on project charters, testing documentation and design analysis of a product development lifecycle
  • Evaluating products and equipment using analytical models and software analysis (ie. FEA, Mathcad)
  • Advising on the development of work instructions to aid in the manufacturing process
  • Directing technical inspections to identify critical components and advising on quality control methods
  • Undertake hands‑on work in all stages of product development (first article inspection, assembly, physical testing etc)
  • Other duties as required
Skills/Knowledge
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, Enterprise PDM, ANSYS, Mathcad, Microsoft Office, and data acquisition software
  • Strong understanding of materials and stress mechanics
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and capabilities
  • Knowledge of quality programs such as ISO 9001:2015 and API
Education
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologist, C.E.T. an asset, or a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Automation, programming, PLC, C++ experience considered valuable
Experience
  • 2-5 years’ experience in research and development or design engineering
  • Oil and Gas experience with knowledge in down hole tool design
