Job description

Quality Control (QC) Specialist

Department: QA/QC
Location: Victoria, BC
Type: Full-time

About Point Hope Maritime

Point Hope Maritime is one of Canada’s oldest full‑service shipyards. We repair and refit commercial, naval, and specialty vessels on the West Coast and are proud of a culture that blends craftsmanship with modern quality systems. If you thrive on variety—one week drafting a new procedure and the next coordinating onboard inspections on a BC Ferry, industrial barge, or an Orca‑class training vessel—you’ll feel at home here.

The Opportunity

We’re hiring a Quality Control (QC) Specialist to lead inspections and create inspection records for vessels under refit. You’ll apply your technical judgement, attention to detail, and collaborative mindset to ensure work meets contract, class, and regulatory requirements while strengthening our ISO 9001:2015 quality management system.

What You’ll Do

  • Plan and run inspections across hull, mechanical, electrical, piping, coatings, and structural scopes; document results and maintain complete inspection records.
  • Develop Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), checklists, hold/witness points, and acceptance criteria aligned to contracts, drawings, and specifications.
  • Coordinate quality activities with Point Hope supervisors, vessel reps, class surveyors, and authorities (e.g., Transport Canada); schedule and escort inspections.
  • Review contracts and technical packages for QA/QC requirements; perform and communicate gap analyses with clear actions and owners.
  • Author and update procedures, work instructions, and forms for QA and QC; translate technical requirements into practical shop‑ready documents.
  • Maintain document control and records (SharePoint/Teams) in accordance with ISO 9001:2015; support internal audits and management of change.
  • Create process maps (swim‑lane diagrams, flow charts) in Microsoft Visio to clarify responsibilities and handoffs.
  • Drive issue resolution by raising and tracking nonconformances, corrective/preventive actions, and lessons learned.

What You Bring

Must‑Have

  • Experience leading or performing inspections in an industrial and/or marine environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Teams, SharePoint, Word, Excel) and Microsoft Visio.
  • Strong technical writing skills (procedures, work instructions, inspection reports).
  • Solid understanding of industrial equipment and machinery; ability to read drawings/specs.
  • Training or working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and records management.
  • Clear, professional communication and the confidence to engage with class/regulatory bodies.

Nice‑to‑Have

  • Auditor training (internal or lead auditor) and/or LEAN/continuous improvement experience.
  • Background in engineering, trades, or marine systems; diploma/degree or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with marine/class standards and authorities (e.g., DNV/ABS/LR, Transport Canada).
  • Exposure to coatings, welding/fabrication, NDE/NDT coordination, or pressure testing.

Competencies

  • Analytical, organized, and detail‑accurate—you close loops and keep clean records.
  • Results‑oriented with sound judgement under schedule pressure.
  • Comfortable working onboard vessels, including confined spaces and at heights; fit for routine shipyard PPE and safety requirements.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Meaningful, visible impact on safety and reliability of vessels that serve our coast.
  • Hands‑on collaboration with skilled trades and seasoned marine professionals.
  • A historic yard that encourages you to rise to your ability and keep learning.
