Job Summary

Boart Longyear is a leading global supplier of drilling services, drilling equipment and performance tooling. It also has a substantial presence in aftermarket parts and service, energy, mine dewatering, oilsands exploration, and production drilling.


The Purchasing Officer purchases materials and services in direct support of ongoing drilling operations. This role reports to the Canada Supply Chain Manager. The incumbent will have full accountability for all purchasing and materials ordering of 3rd party and Boart Longyear manufactured product for Operational and Maintenance requirements, ensuring the business strategies and plans are delivered in the safest, most efficient and effective way. Key measurements of success include: cost reduction, order management, and on‑time delivery of goods and services.


The position is a full-time, 6‑month temporary contract based out of Haileybury, ON.


Job Responsibilities


  • Issues purchase orders to approved suppliers on behalf of BLY for goods and services after obtaining required approvals.

  • Ensures purchase orders are issued through ERP system and current PO status and delivery dates are maintained.

  • Communicates with suppliers regarding open purchase orders to ensure on‑time and accurate delivery of goods and services.

  • Ensures competitive bids are secured from approved suppliers to obtain the best prices, quality, and on‑time delivery.

  • Coordinates with accounting, suppliers and others to resolve issues related to purchase orders and implements permanent solutions.

  • Ensures all suppliers are on BLY approved supplier list.

  • Meet with potential suppliers to negotiate pricing and set up buy opportunities for certain products.

  • Analyzes costs, identifies opportunities and implements changes to reduce zone costs.


Education and Experience


  • Purchasing designation and 2 years’ experience as purchasing agent, preferably in an international company or at least 5 years working for an international company as a purchasing agent.

  • Proven communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to converse with senior levels in all Divisions; Fluent English required, French is considered an asset.

  • Strong computer skills: MS Office Suite, familiar with an ERP environment, preferably Oracle or Dayforce.

  • Possess qualities of analysis, problem solving, decision making, diplomacy, negotiation, self‑motivation, and efficiency.

  • Strong knowledge and ability to plan, prioritize, organize, monitor and conduct activities requiring independent decisions/judgment.

  • Possess a clear working knowledge of multi‑discipline package procurement cycle, expediting, inspection, document control, traffic and logistics aspects of the procurement process and the interfaces between them.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Commitment to working in a team environment.

  • Ability to work within deadlines in a fast paced and high‑pressure environment.

  • Strong client focus and a desire to achieve results is essential.
