Job description
A Bit About Us

Gamemode One was founded 8 years ago to do things right in the Minecraft gaming space - especially doing right by our staff, and right by our players. We care deeply about our vibrant company culture, which enables us all to do our best work. We are looking to scale to meet our full potential, while continuing to prioritize staff‑wellbeing, and make excellent games.

If you don’t see yourself fully reflected in every job requirement listed on the posting above, we still encourage you to reach out, apply and tell us more about yourself in your application. Research has shown that women and underrepresented groups often only apply when they feel 100% qualified. We are committed to creating a more equitable, inclusive and diverse company and we strongly encourage applicants of all genders, ages, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, sexual orientations, and life experiences to apply.

The Opportunity

In our growing organization, you’ll be supporting on a brand new live service project. You’ll be a part of the whole process - supporting with new updates, working on new content and bug fixes.

You’ll bring your knowledge of programming, familiarity with Minecraft and desire to learn and continue to improve your skills. You will not just be working at a great company, but actively making each project more satisfying and engaging for our players.

What do we mean when we say ‘entry‑level’?

This role is listed at an experience level of “entry‑level”. We know that this can mean something different across employers. For us, this means we are looking for someone who has foundational programming experience. This may be from education, personal projects or professional work. We are looking for someone who will be confident working collaboratively with a small team, learning new technologies and workflows.

Within 1 month, you’ll…
  • Complete onboarding to the Minecraft team and onto your first project
  • Familiarize yourself with our tech stack and workflows
  • Start working on small features or fixes with guidance and reviews from senior team members
Within 3 months, you’ll…
  • Take on feature development tasks with increasing independence (ideally you have shipped your first update!)
  • Demonstrate ability to manage your tasks and communicate effectively with other developers and designers
  • Show curiosity by asking questions and learning from mistakes
Within 6 months, you’ll…
  • Own the implementation of new features (by now you have shipped your second update)
  • Be fully embedded into the production team and update pipeline
  • Provide thoughtful feedback to other team members
  • Contribute to technical discussions and problem‑solving sessions, and documentation
  • Balance working in existing code while being mindful of system‑wide impacts
Within 12 months, you’ll…
  • Have shipped multiple updates
  • Take on larger, more complex features
  • Be responsible for the gameplay tech on the project
  • Being involved in the whole update cycle from concept to release
  • Advocate for clean coding practices, and work with QA and tech peers to identify issues earlier in the product lifecycle
  • Optimize game performance early and identify potential risks
Why our job descriptions look like this

Our job descriptions look different than the average, and that’s on purpose! We find the normal approach to be far too prescriptive. Defining explicit qualifications and requirements would be us defining how you should have acquired a certain skillset. What these generally achieve is intimidating those who don’t fit the mold to not apply. That’s not our style. In an effort to be inclusive, and clear, we take a more descriptive approach. Read through the opportunity, and the description of the work you’ll be doing. Decide for yourself if the work excites you, and is something that you are able to rise to the challenge.

Benefits
  • Unlimited paid time off
  • Flexible hybrid schedule
  • Health Spending Account of $3000/year
  • Charitable matching of $2000/year
  • Investment in professional development
  • Access to the benefits above without a probationary period
