Job description

The Software Technologies team provides solutions to meet grid security needs with a comprehensive suite of power system analysis tools, with capabilities for both off-line and on-line analysis. The Department’s flagship product, DSATools, developed exclusively by Powertech, incorporates leading-edge technologies for the modeling and analysis of power systems.

As a Power System Software Engineer, you will be involved in both software development and power system studies. Candidates with background and experience in these areas would be at an advantage.

Duties
  • Develop and implement computation methods and power system models in software
  • Design, code, test and documentation of software
  • Customer support and software product maintenance
  • Perform power system studies ranging from dynamic model validation, transmission planning and operation, load and generation interconnection, integration of renewables, etc.
  • Assist in marketing and delivery of software, software projects and consulting projects
  • Participate in research and development efforts and conduct field measurements at client’s facilities
Qualifications
  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering specializing in Power Systems from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • P.Eng or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of power systems analysis, modeling techniques, and computational algorithms.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Studies Engineer, Consulting Engineer or Software Engineer in a similar position or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge of protection and control systems of rotating machines, substations and power systems is an asset
  • Solid understanding of reliability standards and regulations related to power system operation, protection, grid voltage and frequency controls
  • Experienced with programming in one or more of the following: C/C++, Visual Basic, Java, Python, and Matlab. Excellent knowledge in one or more of the followings is an asset: object-oriented programming, C/C++ programming in Visual Studio environment and data structure.
  • Proficiency and experience in power system simulation software and the application (or development) of commercial software would be a definite asset

Job Grade: P3

Candidates from Eastern Canada (Toronto, Montreal and eastward) are encouraged to apply as the successful hire will provide coverage and responsiveness across time zones supported by Powertech. The role is expected to collaborate effectively across time zones, which may occasionally involve flexibility in working hours to support team members and clients’ needs.
