JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Head of the Local Orthopedics Division and the Medical Director for the sector, the orthopedic surgeon studies, diagnoses and treats illnesses and disorders of the locomotor system.

The orthopedic surgeon treats patients from birth to an advanced age for the full range of musculoskeletal lesions and illnesses. Patients may present problems affecting any anatomical element related to the skeleton, namely the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. This includes congenital disorders, traumatic lesions of the soft tissues and bones, and pathological processes such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, infections, tumours and metabolic bone illnesses.

The orthopedic surgeon uses medical, physical, rehabilitative and surgical therapeutic approaches to improve or re-establish musculoskeletal function and quality of life. The orthopedic surgeon manages the preoperative, perioperative and postoperative care of patients undergoing urgent and non‑urgent surgical procedures. The orthopedic surgeon performs non‑surgical interventions, namely for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Primary and secondary assessments as well as definitive surgical and non‑surgical care for patients with traumatic lesions also fall within the orthopedic surgeon's responsibilities.

The orthopedic surgeon also works with other health professionals to deliver diversified and comprehensive care to patients and their loved ones.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Degree from a recognised medical school and residency leading to licensure in orthopaedic surgery.
  • A recognised medical school is a school that meets the following criteria:
  • Accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) (in the United States);
  • Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a note for Canada.
  • Recognised certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in orthopaedic surgery.
  • Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick;
  • Active member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent liability insurance association;
  • Member of the New Brunswick Medical Society;
  • Privileges with Vitalité Health Network;
  • Registration with New Brunswick Medicare;
  • Experience (one to three years) considered an asset;
  • Any other combination of training and experience deemed relevant and equivalent may be considered;
