Position Summary
The Oil Change Captain is responsible for the daily execution, flow, and performance of the Oil Change / Express Service Lane. This role ensures vehicles move efficiently, promise times are met, quality standards are upheld, and customers receive a consistent, high‑experience visit. This is a working leadership role — hands‑on in the lane while coordinating technicians, supporting advisors, managing workflow, and removing bottlenecks in real time. The Oil Change Captain is the single point of accountability for express lane performance each day.
Key Responsibilities
- 1. Daily Lane Leadership & Flow Control
- Own the daily flow of vehicles through the oil change / express lane
- Control dispatching, bay usage, and vehicle sequencing
- Ensure jobs are assigned appropriately based on skill level and workload
- Identify and remove bottlenecks immediately (wait times, parts delays, approvals)
- 2. Promise Time & Customer Experience
- Ensure realistic promise times are set and consistently met
- Act immediately when delays occur (communicate with advisors early)
- Support advisors in setting expectations for wait vs drop‑off customers
- Maintain a calm, professional environment—even during peak volume
- 3. Quality Control & Process Adherence
- Ensure all oil changes include:
- Proper oil & filter selection
- Torque checks
- Fluid top‑ups
- Tire pressure checks
- Reset of maintenance indicators
- Verify Peace of Mind / Multi‑Point Inspections are completed correctly and on time
- Ensure inspection results are submitted promptly to advisors
- 4. Technician Support & Coaching
- Be a go‑to resource for express technicians
- Coach on:
- Efficiency and time management
- Inspection accuracy
- Lane cleanliness and safety
- Set the standard for work ethic, pace, and professionalism
- Escalate performance or conduct issues to management when needed
- 5. Parts & Tool Coordination
- Ensure oil, filters, and common express parts are stocked and ready
- Work closely with Parts to prevent lane stoppages
- Ensure tools, lifts, and equipment are maintained and ready for use
- 6. Metrics & Accountability
- Track and influence key express lane KPIs:
- Promise time compliance
- Cars per day
- Hours per RO
- Inspection completion rate
- Upsell opportunities
- Provide quick daily feedback to management on lane performance and issues
- 7. Cleanliness, Safety & Professionalism
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe oil change area
- Ensure all safety procedures are followed at all times
- Set the tone for professionalism with customers and teammates
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Automotive service or express lane experience (preferred)
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills
- Natural leadership and communication ability
- Calm under pressure; solution‑oriented mindset
- High attention to detail and quality
- Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment
- Valid driver’s license
