Qualifications

  • Leadership or supervisory experience is essential.
  • Strong understanding of NZSL interpreting work and/or experience in the Deaf sector required.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills are necessary.
  • Fluency in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) is highly desirable.

About the Role

As theNZSL Team Leader, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing day‑to‑day operations, collaborating with the Deaf community, managing rostering, and supporting team wellbeing. You’ll work in close partnership with theDeaf Quality & Promotions Advisor, ensuring cultural competency, service excellence, and strong engagement with the Deaf community.

This role blends hands‑on operational leadership with people management, user engagement and stakeholder collaboration.

What You’ll Be Doing
Lead & Inspire
  • Motivate and supporting a team of NZSL Interpreting Agents to achieve performance and service standards
  • Provide regular feedback, performance coaching, and recognition
  • Create a positive, inclusive and engaged team culture
Operational Excellence
  • Oversee daily workflow, rostering and staffing coverage
  • Manage unplanned leave impacts and service continuity
  • Monitor utilisation, productivity and performance metrics
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and team development
Quality, Compliance & Risk
  • Ensure compliance with contractual, security and quality standards
  • Manage attendance, conduct performance monitoring and support disciplinary processes where required
  • Contribute to cost‑effective service delivery
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with internal teams, clients and community stakeholders
  • Support outreach, promotional and engagement activities
  • Provide accurate reporting and operational insights
What You’ll Bring
Essential
  • Leadership or supervisory experience
  • Strong understanding of NZSL interpreting work and/or experience in the Deaf sector
  • Confidence managing performance, escalations and operational challenges
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • A genuine commitment to accessibility, inclusion and culturally informed service delivery
Highly Desirable
  • Fluency in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL)
  • Experience in rostering, workforce management, or service operations
  • Knowledge of NZ Relay services and Deaf community needs
  • Confidence using digital tools, reporting systems and content platforms
