Job Description
Sinai Health is looking for a Nurse Practitioner to support our Mother Baby Program (MBP)/ Postnatal Ambulatory Clinic (PNAC). The NP utilizes and demonstrates a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for newborn and obstetric patients. This may involve taking a comprehensive obstetric/neonatal and general healthy history; ordering and interpreting diagnostic investigations and laboratory tests; determining a treatment plan in consultation with the physician and the health care team as needed, and evaluating the outcomes of the plan and interventions taken. The NP develops, implements, and evaluates initiatives that improve patient care quality in accordance with the principles of family‑centred care, the strategic goals of the program, and the goals of the organization as a whole. This includes quality assurance, infection control, patient safety and patient satisfaction. The NP is responsible for leading approved practice initiatives and coordinates their work schedule so that it reflects approximately .75 FTE for clinical work and .25 FTE for NP practice related work. The majority of the NP's clinical schedule will be focused in the ambulatory clinic (PNAC).

About the Mother Baby Program
Our Mother Baby Program includes our High Risk Antenatal unit and our Mother Baby Unit. Nurses working on our Mother Baby unit provide care to postpartum patients and their stable neonates as well as postpartum patients with a baby in NICU.

In this role you will:

  • Provide care to newborns which includes, but is not restricted to, physical examinations, communicating diagnoses or consultations, providing referrals, ordering and follow‑up of diagnostic tests, provision of medical orders and prescriptions
  • Support the staff nurses with orders, communicating diagnosis or consultations to ensure they are practicing within their scope of practice
  • Support and facilitate the discharge of patients to ensure flow from Labour & Delivery
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in the establishment of goals and objectives for the program consistent with the provision of high‑quality care
  • Participate in the programmatic development of the clinical area and participate and provide leadership in nursing practice, program development and evaluation
  • Aid the development and maintenance of standards of clinical practice through the creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff, excellence in clinical practice and implementation and utilisation of research
  • Interpret and foster the philosophy, goals and standards of the Department of Nursing, Department of Obstetrics, and Department of Paediatrics
  • Develop partnerships within MSH and within the community at large, including identification of community resources and multi‑cultural services to enhance continuity of care for clients
  • Perform and participate in research activities and implement and advance changes in evidence‑based practice
  • Deliver, coordinate and participate in education and professional development activities/programs involving both staff and clients
  • Perform activities to further develop and strengthen the profession including the supervision of advanced nursing students
  • Act as a resource and serve as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Job Requirements

Mandatory

  • Graduate of a CNO‑approved Nurse Practitioner (NP) program. Equivalent combined education and experience will be considered
  • Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Certificate or equivalent
  • Currently registered (Extended Class) and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Eligible for cross‑appointment to an academic institution
  • 1 year of experience in a family clinic practising as an NP with primary newborn care experience
  • Canadian Nurses Association Perinatal Nursing certificate
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
  • CPR certificate
  • Membership in Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other organizations relevant to the role

Preferred

  • Experience in postpartum and newborn nursing
  • Demonstrated experience through roles of advanced practitioner, educator, researcher and administration/leadership

Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience precepting and evaluating undergraduate and graduate nursing students, as well as medical residents and midwives
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to sensitively communicate with patients/families in vulnerable situations
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and customer services skills
  • Excellent organization, time management, program planning and evaluation skills
  • Demonstrated decision making, problem recognition/solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Proven commitment to collaborative practice and ability to work effectively independently and within an interdisciplinary team in a fast‑paced environment
  • Ability to utilise information technology
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
