Summary of the role

The open position is for a Mechanical Engineer in the hydro mechanical engineering group. The team is responsible for the design of large hydro generator and turbine components, with a primary focus on U.S. projects. This position includes technical responsibility for the mechanical design during all stages of a project life cycle (proposal, contract design, manufacturing and installation). The unique requirements of each hydro project make this a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a candidate with related skills and experience.

The Mechanical Engineer is expected to work closely with colleagues in the engineering department as well as the project management, manufacturing and installation teams. Occasional travel to customer locations, project sites or other Andritz offices is required.

The following responsibilities form the core of this role:

  • Optimization of hydro turbine mechanical design, for proposals, contracts and studies;
  • Analysis of mechanical components, using in-house tools or developing calculations as necessary;
  • Documentation for proposals, technical reports, and customer O&M manuals;
  • Review and approval of mechanical drawings to ensure contractual and internal requirements are met;
  • Creation of engineering instructions that define technical requirements for manufacturing , installation and testing;
  • Disposition of non-conformances during manufacturing and installation;
  • Review and analysis of site data and testing;
  • Creation and calibration of design tools.
  • Lead design reviews with the aid of the technical subject matter experts;
  • Provide support manufacturing, workshop testing, installation and commissioning of systems;
  • Participate in problem solving and root cause identification;
  • Participate in the planning of engineering activities related to the portfolio of projects on which he/she is assigned and report progress to internal project team;

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • Professional Engineer license preferred;
  • Five (5) years in refurbishment or design of hydroelectric turbines or in design and repair of large steel fabrications;
  • Excellent problem solving skills, sound judgment, initiative & creativity;
  • Ability to work with people in a team environment;
  • Manufacturing experience (welding, machining and/or casting) and site experience is a plus;
  • Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously.
  • Solutions focused while managing the needs of both internal and external customers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities;
  • CAD proficiency required (Siemens NX preferred)
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite, and relevant IT tools;
  • 10-15% travel domestically and abroad as required;
