Job description
Overview

The Materials Laboratory Engineer will provide technical support, perform various tasks to test, analyze materials and evaluate results, conduct materials/metallurgical analysis utilizing advanced analytical techniques (including SEM/EDS), determine failure mechanisms and identify root cause, document findings and prepare reports for internal and external customers.

This position requires analytical and technical support services to Technical Airworthiness Group, Process Engineers, Repair Development Engineers, failure investigations/analysis teams, warranty or litigation cases professionals – while ensuring quality and compliance with industry standards, aviation certification regulations and contractual requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collecting samples, conducting standardized tests, operating specialized equipment
  • Preparation of samples for metallographic analysis including sectioning, mounting, polishing, etching and electro-etching.
  • Assisting in preparation of detailed Test Plans and Work Scope proposals, including resources and timeline, in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Performing routine to complex metallurgical tests according to prescribed procedures.
  • Providing technical support, performing analysis and preparation of technical reports for materials/metallurgical analysis of turbine engine parts. (i.e., turbine blade analyses).
  • Assisting in the interpretation of materials test results and advising on appropriate laboratory analytical techniques to be used for failure analysis, research, development of new repairs and/or on-going support.
  • Scheduling and prioritizing production and project work.
  • Ensuring compliance to the applicable internal and external requirements.
  • Participating in proactive risk analysis of flight/product safety critical parts and processes.
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records necessary for the quality, regulatory and contractual needs of the company.
  • Tracking progress on tests, analysis, experiments and recording findings in database.
  • Ensuring traceability of communication and distribution of test results.
  • Coaching, mentoring and training of Materials Laboratory Technicians.
  • Mentoring laboratory team on purchasing consumables, preventive maintenance and equipment calibration activities, including purchase orders, expenditure authorizations, cost benefit analyses, and procurement specifications.
  • Carries out special projects as assigned.

Requirements
  • College or University diploma in mechanical engineering technology, materials sciences, metallurgy; or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in testing of materials utilized in aerospace industry.
  • High degree of mechanical aptitude, accuracy and precision.
  • Fully conversant with the latest laboratory test methods.
  • Working knowledge of precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints.
  • Recording data, advanced level of technical writing and preparation of reports.
  • Adherence to safety protocols.
  • Experience in a metallurgical and/or materials laboratory environment.
  • Experience within an aerospace or manufacturing setting.
  • Eligibility for registration by a professional associations of engineering/applied science technologists or equivalent - considered an asset.
