Job description
Overview

Snowfarmer - General Labourers work as part of the Safety Operations team. They set up and maintain snow fences and related apparatus, perform trail maintenance, aid with hazard marking, transport and pack first aid equipment, and perform general labour as required. They report issues to the Snowfarming Lead Hand or a Safety Operations supervisor and ensure daily duties are completed efficiently with documentation. The incumbent should expect to be working outside all day, every day, sometimes in adverse or extreme weather conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Build, setup, take down, move, and maintain snow fences; log activities.
  • Ski or snowboard to access work sites.
  • Work through extended periods of physically demanding conditions.
  • Perform shoveling and other trail maintenance tasks.
  • Enforce the Alpine Responsibility Code, slow riding zones, and area closures.
  • Identify and address safety concerns pertaining to staff and guests.
  • Assist in emergency situations, including lift evacuation, avalanche rescue, first aid, fire, etc.
  • On-slope risk management: identify and mitigate hazards on hill (run checks, hazard marking).
  • Assist other departments as required or perform any other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
  • Respect and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures as set in the Corporate Policies, Employee Handbook and Safety Operations Training Manual; understand and adhere to Ski Marmot Basin’s Harassment Policy and the Privacy Policy.
  • Ensure all work-related activities follow Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation as it relates to the job.
  • Report any damage to vehicles to the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by your supervisor(s).
Qualifications
  • Complete Safety Operations ski skills assessments.
  • Physically fit to perform strenuous manual labour.
  • First Aid course/training preferred.
  • Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 or equivalent CAA accreditation (preferred).
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated strong skiing/snowboarding ability in all mountain and snow conditions in Advanced/Most difficult and Expert/Extreme terrain.
  • Physically able to ski with heavy loads (25+ kg) and perform Grade 1 Ski Patroller tasks.
  • Familiarity with Marmot Basin Safety Operations Training Manual, policies, SOPs and first aid algorithms.
  • Experience building, setting up, taking down, and maintaining snow fences; log the activities.
  • Trained to ride with an unloaded rescue toboggan, load/unload it from lifts, and repack it.
  • Knowledge of first aid equipment locations and ability to assist in packaging and repacking as directed.
  • Learn sweeps in the Eagles Ridge and Caribou Ridge Areas; become familiar with Marmot Basin radio protocol and Avalanche Rescue Plan.
  • WHMIS and safety training; ability to report damages or issues with company vehicles.
  • Strong customer-service orientation and professional deportment; ability to work under pressure, independently or as part of a team.
  • Good organizational and multi-tasking skills; proactive problem solving.

  • Shifts: 9 hours, 1-hour unpaid lunch; 5 days out of 7; weekends and holidays required.
