Overview

Reporting to the Head of Finance, Public and Private Markets this position plays a key leadership role in advising the business and supporting the execution of strategic plans for Private Markets. The position will provide opportunities to demonstrate competencies such as business insight, strategic thinking, process improvements, relationship management, and team leadership.

The Managing Director, Finance, MIM Private Markets is a highly accountable finance professional. Leading a team of finance professionals, the incumbent is accountable for supporting and working directly with the business and senior leadership to articulate the strategic and financial story and provide strategic insights, analysis and advice throughout the reporting and product development cycle. In addition, this position is responsible for proactively driving the development and infrastructure to drive enhanced process efficiency in the team function while continuing to maintain a high focus on driving insight to the business. This person is a highly engaged leader that is instrumental in team development and engagement for the entire WAM Finance organization (including shared services) and will influence outside of direct lines of accountability to ensure valuable advice and analysis to all of the Private Markets business partners.

Position Responsibilities :

Financial Insight, Reporting and Analysis :

Proactively meet the needs of the Finance and Business senior management, provide valuable analysis demonstrating understanding of underlying transactions, business drivers and trends

• Acting as the financial advisor to the business, understand the needs and information requirements of various areas to provide beneficial insight to support the delivery of the Private Markets strategic plans.
• Responsible for delivering the financial story on our Private Markets business to senior management and our internal customers.
• Working collaboratively with the business leaders and our partners in finance, effectively manage the end to end process and deliver a sound financial plan for Private Markets and the Institutional business.
• Responsible for collaborating on, identifying and implementing continuous financial operational improvement initiatives to improve efficiency and timeliness of the WAM finance function.
• Manage business unit management's expectations regarding deliverables and deadlines.
• Build effective relationships and establish a high level of credibility with Business and Finance management across WAM.

Business Development :

This role is critical in providing strategic financial advice to the Global Head of Private Markets and other business leaders (e.g. the private markets ExCo) and other GWAM leadership (e.g. the GWAM CFO) with respect to financial modelling, product and profitability analysis and M&A, and other business-related activities including various project work and KPI tracking.

• Participate actively in the integration, due diligence, financial structuring and negotiations around potential M&A deals, and other business decisions (e.g. new products, strategic projects) and the strategic direction of MIM Private Markets.
• Provide leadership over the design, implementation and execution of the MIM Private Markets operating model.
• Work with functional partners to provide input into decisions required to cost-effectively manage Private Markets expenses - meet the annual financial bottom-line targets
• Manage risk exposures within targets.
• Effectively manage the relationships of a wide range of internal and external partners related to Private Markets matters (e.g. external auditors, regulators, insurance operating divisions and a wide span of corporate functions).
• Manage and develop finance talent for Private Markets and Global Finance.

Leadership and Team Development :

• Demonstrate strong interpersonal, listening, interviewing and planning skills, for people management.
• Provide regular feedback to staff within and outside of direct lines of accountability.
• Cultivate an innovative environment by supporting creativity and high performance teamwork.

Required Qualifications :

• Strong finance background, with post-secondary education and 10+ years of increasing responsibility in financial management, reporting and analysis, and financial operational improvement.
• Strong business sense with a solid understanding of the business environment and the ability to understand complex concepts and articulate the big picture perspective.
• Experience in private markets is a definite asset.
• Experience with financial reporting processes, data and information management, reporting and analysis.
• Excellent management and leadership skills with proven track record of leading teams with and without direct lines of authority.
• Meticulous with excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills with the ability to cater the message to various stakeholders including senior executive and non-technical audiences.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across WAM and with external collaborators; ability to collaborate, negotiate and influence effectively.
• Ability to challenge the status quo and deliver new and innovative enhancements to the financial processes
• Excellent customer focus and commitment to quality.
• Demonstrated leadership skills in achieving department, project and individual objectives, and in motivating and developing staff.
