Description
Intrmediate Underwriting Specialist – Construction

Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – 2 days/week in office)

An industry-leading insurer has created a new opportunity within its Construction, Renewable Energy, and Mining team. The company is seeking a seasoned property underwriting specialist to take a leadership role in expanding its footprint in the large-risk construction and infrastructure space.

This position is designed for an underwriting professional who brings both technical expertise and strong broker relationships. The successful candidate will play a central role in underwriting some of the most significant infrastructure, power, and energy transition projects across Canada, while shaping the future of a growing, specialized portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwrite new and renewal business with a focus on:
    • Builder’s Risk (projects $250K+ in premium)
    • Wrap-Ups ($100K+ in premium)
    • Construction operational property
    • Renewable energy and power projects (combined/single cycle plants, LNG distribution, utilities, mining operations, and critical mineral projects).
  • Drive business development and portfolio growth by prospecting and securing large commercial and multinational accounts ($200M+ in annual revenue).
  • Collaborate with brokers, clients, engineers, and internal stakeholders to deliver tailored underwriting solutions.
  • Serve as a technical resource on complex industrial, infrastructure, and non-standard construction risks.
  • Support portfolio strategy and contribute to the execution of a five-year growth plan.
  • Ensure underwriting quality, profitability, and compliance while exercising local underwriting authority.
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience as a commercial property underwriter, with significant expertise in large risk construction and Builder’s Risk policies.
  • Background underwriting non-standard, industrial, civil, and infrastructure projects beyond four-wall construction.
  • Experience in energy and/or mining underwriting considered an asset.
  • Strong technical underwriting skills with the ability to structure and negotiate complex placements.
  • Established relationships with brokers and clients in the construction and energy sectors.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work independently while thriving in a collaborative, production-oriented team environment.
