Instructor Employment Access & Skills Development - Retail and Service Careers

Position Summary

This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students’ progress, and ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment, and other inventories.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments, and independent or group projects.
  • Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.
  • Prepares, administers, and marks papers, tests, exams, and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students’ progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.
  • Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
  • Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
  • Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software, and tools.
  • Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work, or hands-on training.
  • Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  • Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Area Hiring Criteria
  • Minimum three (3) years recent experience in the hospitality, retail, or tourism industry with a minimum of one (1) year in a supervisory role
  • Degree in any of the following areas: adult education, special education, psychology, disability studies, community support, or vocational/rehabilitation (preferred)
  • Provincial Instructor’s Diploma (completed or in progress) or equivalent instructional certification
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in creating and delivering curriculum with a focus on skills training along with using a variety of instructional approaches and strategies to accommodate the diverse learning needs of students with cognitive disabilities
  • Experience in supporting/hosting students with cognitive disabilities on work experience, (while creating and sustaining employer relationships)
  • Current knowledge of the effects of cognitive disabilities and mental health issues on the learning/vocational development of students
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a wide variety of contexts
  • Previous success working collaboratively and effectively in a team-teaching environment
  • Proficiency with current digital and software platforms and apps, including cloud-based and Office 365 tools
  • Training or experience in any of the following areas: adult education, special education, psychology, disability studies, or vocational/career development (preferred)
  • Knowledge of community agencies and support services available to persons with cognitive disabilities (preferred)
  • Current understanding of barriers and accommodations/adaptive skills related to people with cognitive disabilities in educational and employment settings (preferred)
  • FoodSafe Instructor Certification (preferred)
  • Current proficiency in self-service technology in the hospitality/retail industry (preferred)
