This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the University’s compliance with health and safety regulations. This position involves providing training, conducting inspections, performing risk assessments, and maintaining effective communication on safety initiatives. The Safety Associate also serves as a resource on Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) matters, supporting University Units in meeting regulatory standards, guidelines, and best practices.
Key responsibilities include offering consultation and resources to the University’s Joint and Local Occupational Health & Safety Committees, Operational units, and Academic units within the University. These consultative activities are to provide and effectively enhance workplace safety and compliance with Federal Occupational Health and Safety regulations, WorkSafeBC Regulations, and applicable UBC Policies. The Safety Associate will also support the development of web-based health and safety training for the broader University community.
Additionally, this role requires close collaboration with UBC safety personnel, faculty, and staff to design, implement, and oversee comprehensive OH&S programs across the institution.
This position reports to the SRS Advisor, Education Programs & Planning and works closely with the University Community on health & safety initiatives. This position works closely with personnel in UBC administrative offices as well as UBC Faculties, departments, and ancillary operations. The incumbent may represent the University with external regulatory agencies including WorkSafeBC and health & safety colleagues from other institutions.
Work supervised by SRS Advisor, Education Programs & Planning. This position supports the implementation of safety program practices to conform to various regulations, federal (WHMIS, TDG) and provincial (WorkSafeBC, BC Fire Code) through the development and implementation of safety related training and auditing functions. Inadequate training or consultation could result in serious injury or disease to faculty, staff and students; loss of equipment or facilities; fines and legal liability to UBC as well as loss of reputation to UBC.
This position performs responsibilities under the direct supervision of the SRS Advisor, Education Programs & Planning.
This position does not directly supervise full or part-time staff. This position provides functional supervision to ensure compliance of all individuals, including faculty and staff.
