Job description

Rovio is part of the SEGA family and world famous for our flagship IP Angry Birds - want to know more about Rovio as an employer?Click here .

Rovio Toronto is a human-scale studio of passionate gamers with a track record of building fresh, fun games with iconic brands. Our focus is mobile, with ambitions to grow beyond as new opportunities arise. Being small keeps us agile and gives everyone meaningful ownership. We value transparency and candour, empowering each other to do our best work, supported by a hybrid model and a strong sense of community.

We’re looking for a creative Game Designer to join our vibrant Rovio Toronto team, makers of Angry Birds Bounce on Apple Arcade and an unannounced new project, and we need your help to make it truly joyful.

In this role, you’ll be a key contributor to the game’s core experience, helping to bridge cozy progression and meaningful upgrades with a high-speed, momentum-driven action phase. You’ll work closely with our Lead Designer to craft levels, tune progression, and design gameplay modifiers that keep players coming back for "just one more round."

This is an open vacancy with a salary range of 73,000–90,000 CAD per year. At this stage, we are primarily focusing our search on candidates based in the local area. The role is hybrid, requiring onsite presence at our Toronto studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Join us and help us build a culture of trust, passion, and innovation!

You will have impact and fun at work by:
  • Crafting the Flow: Contribute to the design of the "Action Phase," focusing on level content, pacing, and the "ebb and flow" that makes every session feel rewarding.
  • Expanding the Experience: Help design varied gameplay modifiers and secondary modes that keep the core loop fresh and surprising for players.
  • Building the World: Work on the synergy between the meta-game and the action gameplay to ensure a cohesive and satisfying player journey.
  • Hands-on Implementation: Use Unity to directly implement, tweak, and polish game elements, moving from concept to playable reality.
  • Collaborative Iteration: Actively participate in team playtests and feedback sessions, using our in-office days to brainstorm and refine the game’s "feel" together.
Experience and skills we are looking for:
  • Design Foundations: 2+ years of experience in Game Design or Level Design. We value professional experience, but we are also open to seeing impressive personal projects or a strong indie portfolio that demonstrates your craft.
  • Unity Proficiency: Practical, hands-on experience working within Unity to build and iterate on game content.
  • Premium Design Mindset: A passion for "Pure Gameplay." You understand how to create "sticky" and engaging mobile experiences through mechanics, joy, and progression rather than aggressive IAP hooks.
  • Documentation & Logic: The ability to articulate your ideas through clear design specs and maintain balance spreadsheets. (Experience with game economies is a definite plus!)
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. You enjoy sharing ideas and are comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback.
